I am looking for the well illustrated and written flag mirror install thread. I tried the search and found a bunch of unrelated crap. Is it me?

Do you mean for the right side mirror? There used to be an article on the Pelican site but it may not be there any longer? To mount the right side mirror, you pull the door panel, they reach up to the sheetmetal at the top of the door near the vent window and you'll feel the nut plate inside. I have a small 90 degree pneumatic drill and I drilled a hole from inside and then drilled it larger so the screw will go in. I then mounted the mirror and used it to guide the drill for the other screw hole. I touched up the paint and was done. The scarry part is drilling the hole but you can also use a punch from underneath too and then counter punch it from the top and drill.

I think he is looking for a thread that shows how to mount 911 flag mirrors. I have not seen one actually. I did my own with no help from a thread. Maybe I should make one. They are not really all that difficult. Use the base gasket for a pattern. The holes are quite large and it goes nowhere near where the stock mirror goes. It's more down on the side of the door on the curve. Then it uses a clamp type to secure it to the door. Cut away at the door slowly, you dont want the holes too big. Keep trimming till it fits right just a little at a time. The end results are great. At least on my car I think they look like they belong there.

Scott,
are your mirrors equidistant from the front of the door, or are they like the ones in the pic (the passenger's is farther back than the driver's)? |

Here is the thread that those pictures came from. I did a search for "911 mirror" and found it back.

Mike,
Those are my measurements and car. I took those measurements with the mirrors already mounted and are to the rubber base. Using the base gasket as a template, as commented earlier. makes it easier. Make sure you have the metal backing plates that go inside of each door..they are often missing on 911's but are needed on the 914 for strength...they are cheap..like 8 bucks apiece. After you have the mounting holes made drill a small hole through the door and the backing plate and rivet it on. Sure helps when loosening and adjusting and taking it off! That is about all I know on the mounting as I had the body shop do this when I had the car stripped and painted. I do have my passenger side back further then the drivers side to make it functional. |

I knew I wasn't hallucinating! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) Thanks Ernie for finding it, and Jim for posting it. That thread should be a classic if it isn't already (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
I am a symmetry buff so I may put both mirrors back, IF that is possible. Thanks again guys! |
