Hi folks,

I heard rumors, that you can use stub axles from a later modell 944 (944 s2 or 944 turbo) in combination with early 911 rear hubs.
The trick is , that the splines of the 944 stub axle fits into the early 911 hubs. On the other side it should be possible
to use the outer cv-joints of the same 944 modell which provides splines for the 914/4 axles.

That would be a very cheap alternative to the expensive 914/6 stub axles ...

does anyone is using this combination ?

Clay Perrine from Rennlist wrote this a while ago:

"The rear hub used on a 914/6 is the same as the one used on the 69-73 911. The stub axle is a custom part. The CV axle is the same length as a /4, but it uses a different splined axle shaft and CV joint.

Here's a way to get a 5 lug conversion on the rear without ANY machining or finding the pircey 914/6 rear hubs. Get 69-73 911 rear hubs. Get the axles complete with the stub axles from a 944 turbo with the ALUMINUM trailing arms. The splines on the 944 turbo stub axles fit the 69 911 flanges, and they are the correct length. Remove the CV joints from the 944 axle and discard the axle. Put the 944 CV joint on to a 914/4 drive shaft. The 944 CV joint internal splines are the same as the 914/4 axle. Find a 915 transaxle from about a 75 911, and remove the drive flanges from it. If you got the correct ones, they will match the 944 CV joints and will bolt onto the 914 transaxle.

The extra bonus to this is you get beefier CV joints. This may benefit the V8 guys."

To make it work correctly you have to add a 1" spacer on one end of the axle.Wes Hildreth and I discussed this at length, and we measured a 911 axle and a 914 axle. He is the one that found the combo of 944 and 911 parts that I sent out, for that very reason."

I think you wind up with 100mm c/v's just like an SC+.

Does anyone know if the later hub centric hub fit into the 914 rear bearing?

Unless you are doing an engineering project, wouldn't it just be easier and cheaper (in the long run---time=$$$) to just buy the correct 914-6 stub axle?

He means that when the axles are at max extension the C/V's are still being pulled apart beyond max extension. I have also read that this is not true as the 911 joints are thicker. Did you compare max compression and max extension lengths between the 914's and 911's before you mounted them? If not, jack the car up and see if the axle shafts have any play(back and forth slop) at full droop. Whatever you find there will probably be the same as when the shock at full compression.

I guess extension is the key word.

Brad stated, in the past, in at least one post that this is not a problem.

no, cause i'm the lucky one who can get a pair of those 944 s2 stub axles for about 50 euros ...

That is a great $$. I had to check the conversion rate... What do you think your total outlay will be for your project? The other beni would be that you can use all 914 CVs and axles with the NOS stuff.

That's the whole problem. I really like the idea of using all OEM parts for a 5 lug setup; but if you don't have access to these semi-rare and usually expensive parts then you're much better off just using redrilled and studded 4-lug hubs. You know the ones most of us use and have never heard of failing.

I have become a big fan of "do it right" instead of my old ways of "do it cheap" which usually lead to "do it over" but you have to draw the line somewhere. Otherwise you end up with a perfect 914 that cost you $75k and that's just stupid.
