Thought I would start a new thread for all to view and learn from.
Got the muffer and muffler bracket off for a better view. Check out the arrow below the hole?? more failure in case? Went ahead and drained the oil. Hope I don't find too much metal. Tomarrow I will start unbuckling everything so i can drop the tranny lower. Then we'll peer into the abyss..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) later Attached image(s) |

Haha that's what happened to my last transmission! Sorry i'm not laughing at you, i'm just glas i wasn't the only one. I just broke my third. The first a washer/spacer shreaded apart and fot stuck in the pinion and the second looked like yours and the third makes some really nasty sounds. Good luck with that. What are you gonna do to fix that?

you should be able to just replace the back plate.
you can do that without dropping the tranny. that is, IF the internals check out OK otherwise ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Andy |

I don't know what that is (arrow), but I don't think it's related. probably just a casting defect that the factory considered acceptable. No case/cover defect could have cause this, it was definitely a failure from the inside out.

Uh, guys, that is the speedo drive gear that _DRILLED_ its way through the rear case. Either the pinion bearing failed or the large nut at the end of the pinion shaft was not tightented, came loose and machined a hole in the case.
In either case, the rear cover is hosed. Get the rear cover from your tailshift tranny and install. Or better yet, do a sideshift conversion on your old tranny and take the best parts from the two. If the bearing is OK, you will still need to replace the big nut/worm drive. It takes a 30mm socket. James |

James, hoped you would chime in.
It will be a couple of days before I am inside the tranny to inspect. In the meantime, are there any clues (from how the car was behaving) to describe the two failure scenerios you described? Also, regarding using the tailshifter end cover, I core swapped the whole thing so....not an option. But I will be contacting the seller to "sort this out" thx |

Not sure if this is worth noting. This pic is the bottom of my drip pan after draining the tranny last nite.
No big chucks of metal yet, but lots of brass fragments (from the bolt). At some point, I will need to learn how to do a proper flush of the tranny. Can this be done with the tranny in the car? Attached image(s) |

If you want some help.. I have all of the tools and lots of experience with 914 transmissions. Plus I live in Hurst, so it's not that far to McKinney...
The rear cover on your transmission is hosed. But if the internal parts are good, we can put a new cover on it. Let me know if you need some help. |

Made some progress today. Got everything unbuckled and lowered the tranny to a workable level.
Rear cover is being stubborn, but was able to remove the speedo drive (see below). Looks none worse for the wear (to my untrained eyes). Important to note that with the drive removed, I can see that the 30mm bolt is completely seperated from the pinion. So hopefully the worm/bolt backed off the pinion verses the pinion bearing failing. Thanks to Clay Perrine for the great phone support and keeping me out of the deep end. This club continues to prove that it is made up of super folks. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) Attached image(s) |

Does anyone have a tip for removing the rear cover. I have removed all the bolts. I used a rubber hammer to lightly bang on the ears to break the seal between the end cover and the intermediate plate, but I can't get the end cover to let go.
Basically, how can I put force on the end plate without causing the intermediate plate to separate from the main case? Prying apart would be easy, but I am afraid of damaging the mating surface on the intermediate plate. Anyone?? |

QUOTE(jr91472 @ Sep 24 2004, 08:54 PM) I can see that the 30mm bolt is completely seperated from the pinion. This is good news. It means the bolt was not tightented down properly and most likely not a bearing failure. You will need a new speedo worm drive in addition to the cover. And, while the tranny is apart, you and clay should really fix it. You should get a tail shifter core (maybe you old one) and re-work everything. Have you contacted the seller? James |

Maybe a "little" more force. DO NOT USE GORILLA STRENGTH.
Most likely, the re-assembler used a non-drying gasket sealer to seal the cover. You could try prying with a long screwdriver, up the speedo drive hole. But I really thing you just need to keep working the cover. Make sure you really do have all the nuts off, but that is kinda obvious. James |

Ok, got the end cover off. Now for the pics. First is the source of the hole - worm drive.

Now the end cover. Note the scoring in addition to the hole. This is from the Guide Sleeve.

Finally the back in of the tranny. Note the thrush washer apparently moved when the cover was taken off. Also, the Guide Sleeve was close to falling out once the rear cover was removed. Is sitting kind of loose in this pic.
Clay, PM is on the way. Attached image(s) |
