looking for a cheap DD for driving to work since the 914 is down for the count and cant be depended on for such action ; ran across an very nice clean 2000 TT 5 speed with 100k miles -
car has new lots of stuff: clutch, flywheel, t.o. bearing, engine was completely resealed and new everything - owner is a audi cert. tech. what's the good bad and ugly with these cars? PHil Attached image(s) ![]() |

As far as I'm concerned, the "bad" is I don't have one ... Make sure the timing belt and water pump have been done. It's a 60K mile thing, no matter what they tell you. I'd avoid the VR6 powered ones: timing chain issues around 100K.

Thanks, its a V5 ,
and yes its had the clutch, flywheel and t.o. bearing done and all the seals, and also the wtater pump , thermostat and timing belt. looks like its all been addressed, but i will be certain to make sure, |

For "cheap daily driver", I'd go for something from Asia. Older Civic (if you can find one that hasn't been riced out or beat to s**t), older Camry, relatively recent Kia or Hyundai, or look into the super-cheap new cars like the Nissan Versa and Mitsu Eclipse.
That assumes that "cheap" and "reliable" are the top of your list, and "fun" is down quite a ways on it. --DD |

My son has a 2000 225hp tt quattro convert. He has had issues with the battery dying on him. Had a new alternator put on which was a real bear. Still has a problem. There is a problem with a security electronic board located behind the passenger seat that can get wet. Don't know if this is an issue with coupes. So look out for electrical issues. And with any 4 cylinder vw you gotta keep that timing belt up to date.

As Crusty said, make sure the timing belt is good. These are an interference engine and a broken timing belt can/will destroy the valves, all 20 of them.
I have the 5V 1.8T in my 914 and I love it. Mine has a little more HP than stock... The 1.8T is super reliable if cared for. Try not to buy from a kid or from someone that has added mods and beat on the car. You want to find a 100% original car if you can. |

verified, all that you have mentiond has been done, should be good for a couple years. would be more for me than either my son or daughter, thats why i would get a stick, they dont like stick , keeps them from borrowing my car too much (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I cant tell if this is quattro or FWD
Normally the quattro's have little badge in the grill which is missing from yours. The 1.8T is a really really good engine, Keep it stock and it'll last a while. The seals tend to shrink up with age and leak but if they've gone through all of is then it'll probably be good. I would advise asking him if he has Vag-Com and if he can show you the codes it pulls up in Vag-Com if any. |

Nice! This one needs some tlc so I brought it home! 100k miles. I need to know more about what you did and the sources for parts and stuff. Don know what's available.
It needs a deep polish. New carpets and salt some point recover seats. The ratchet thing that raises and lower seats is broken. How do you fix that? Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |
