I was fortunate to see them in person at Nuremberg Ring in 1970 and 1971. Really badass on the straight away in front of the grandstand.

@1970 Neun vierzehn - Thanks for sharing the 917 pics. Which track are they from? I saw the #2 Gulf car years ago (assuming it's the same car).

Those photos are from the PCA Parade in Snowmass Colorado, circa 1978. I've forgotten what track that was, but Aspen was not far away either. Attached thumbnail(s) |

Same car probably. I saw it at the PCA Parade in '76 at Brainerd and again around '78-'79 at a vintage race at Watkins Glen. Gerry Sutterfield owned and drove it. I think he owns a Porsche dealership in Florida.

Race cars all have brake lights and running lights for things like Lemans

He didn't win the final due to mechanical issues (still got 2nd IIRC) but he was the fastest on the track...wickedly fast. |

Race cars all have brake lights and running lights for things like Lemans ^ Correct. We did a deep dive into Porsche race car taillights, from 904~ through 962~, in 000. I learned a bunch of arcane stuff, as I don't think they had ever been examined or documented. Great article in latest 000 Magazine (#13) about Atwood. Eric did a great job with that piece, and there's a little something on 917-015/035 you might dig in the next issue… |

Here you go then, this is the race I was at. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) BTW I was 11 years old when my brother took me specifically to see Donahue and the 917 race. I remember touring the paddock and on the track and in the pits after the race. I don't remember if I touched the holy grail but I was close enough to all the cars. I do remember the 917 taking this sharp turn with a little knoll, it was a freaking ground missile that magically stuck to track. The other memory of the day is I had to pee and the dirty track washrooms, basically piss on the floor, it just reeked of urine. I had to walk 1/4 mile to find a tree. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uO-70EQ8mPA |

I was at Rennsport Reunion time before last. Of course there were multiple 917’s in attendance (I believe there are more in existence now than the factory built).
At any rate I was hanging with some friends that own and ran the Lemans class winning Flying Lizard #44 GT3 RSR 911 car there. The owners son, who is a pretty competent club race level driver was turning the same lap times as Bruce Canepa in his Gulf 917K. Technology has come a long way. |

I saw Mark Donohue driving the Sunoco #6 917-30 at Riverside Int'l. Raceway in 1973. That sound is still rattling around in my head.
For those who are interested I posted a thread on that day along with a report on the IROC race with 911RSRs a few years ago. IROC 1974 |

It's been neat to see them at vintage races and at 1-2 track days, but there's nothing like a race car driven in anger, in period. The only time I can really remember the sound of a 917 making me think it was like what it must have been in 1970 was Van Lennep going over the top of Turn 1 at Laguna in the Sandeman 917K a few years ago. The sound was so distinct...as was the sight of it. Not like the others weren't driven hard, but Gijs was just on a different level at that spot. |

Pete- you're too young. I'm not too young and was also lucky enough to see Mark drive the monster at Road America, and even lucky enough to see my other hero, Jo Siffert run the STP 917 at Road America...
(Was also at Brainerd '76 and Aspen '78 so I'm definitely dating myself. Anyone at the Aspen '78 Parade will remember what the Pitkin County road department was famous for...) |

Really enjoyable video - James May is underrated/appreciated IMO, the other two clowns got all the attention. The sound of that MFI 12cyl still gives me goosebumps every time whether youtube or in-person.

917's were not street cars though there is/was one licensed for street use. Helps if you're a Count. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEMzkH1faqI https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/st...al-porsche-917/ |
