Since I don't want the retractible headlights I am using that space for the dual radiators...

The typical Boxster/996 radiators are mounted at an extreme angle at the corners and vent below the car. There is not much room in the 914 so this will have to work. I could use a Renegade type or custom sizes but my guidelines are to use as many existing parts for future availability or replacement and only design and fabricate mounts and ducting.

This car already had the headlight bucket and bottom cut out. I will get the Boxster y-pipes and hoses next week to test fit them.

Tight fit but I do lose some trunk space. I may remove the oil cooler but I may need it if I up the hp of the Audi twin turbo.

For Royce: the radiator is ~18" wide including the necks and nearly 17" high. I don't think the capacity will be sufficient for a V8...

Also, I am not using my headlight area and it will still be a challenge to package them. I have a center oil cooler which may barely clear them. Ducting may defeat my purpose of saving the front trunk...

Felix, I wanted to say thanks for having the balls to try new things and break new ground. I think lots of people will benefit from your R&D.

I'll need your help to bring them to life (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

My primary two objectives are to raise the appreciation of the 914 and to have fun re-creating it with some new ideas...

They have aluminum tubing Y's to plumb the radiators in parallel. They really reduce the diameter probably to fit in the wheel well. Reminds me of what I initially did on my V8 conversion.

hmmm, Jason's are consistent diameter. His may be off an "S" or later Boxster. I know the "S's" have an additional center radiator. 3.2 vs. 2.5L. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif) Hope these are enough to cool the 2.7 twin turbo. I'll keep the center oil cooler used on the race 2.7 air cooled engine just in case...

Felix,

Now that is what I'm talking about! =-)

Seriously, not having the front trunk sucks.

Would you happen to know the diameter of the tubing once it splits to go up front?

Parallel. Why didn't I think of that? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif)

All my drawings were to plumb for 2 smaller radiators in series.

But as one person said in another posting, the temp differential is wha makes for greater cooling efficiency. Rads in series would not take advantage of this. Parallel will.

I appreciate the risk you are taking both in time and $$$.

It seems like you have many resources but I'd like to offer up anything I can for the cause seeing as I eventually will go this route too.
PM me with your needs/thoughts and who knows??? =-))

Roger,

I "could" have bought a real nice -6 or two for what I'm spending on this car but it's value is in the design and build. Jason and I laugh about it but we know we will have unique cars once they are done. Thanks for the offer, there's alot of details to handle. At some point I will organize a bunch of us to reassemble the car after it has been painted and all the components plated or powder coated probably a week before '06 SEMA... To gain more thermal capacity, you could also use the center radiator ala the cup cars...GT3RSR etc.

Finally acquired full radiator assemblies and fit up the lines, now the real packaging work begins. They were not cheap since the PO bought them used from a dismantler for $1500! Fortunately I got them for less. I plan to use the A/C condensers that add about an inch of thickness. The fans may be tough to fit but interestingly they duct the air down under the car just where the floor cut-out below where the headlight buckets used to be... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

Have sawsall and tin snips ready but I need to wait until the neighbor and babies are away...

Tim, I have a DIY article for to the "s" auxillary radiator upgrade in 986's but they have much more space between the radiators than on this car.

Yep, this is a tight package and the intake shroud/vent has an extreme angle. The thing to remember about modern engines is they have less cooling requirements than older especially V8 engines. The radiator in the Nissan powered 914 was ducted abruptly and he lives in Las Vegas...
