going to depend a bit on the internal onstruction.
i have a similar Leistritz, which i like. it is not loud at idle. it does have a nice raspy "ripping burlap" sound to it when the engine comes up on the cams. the HP figures for the Leistritz (all stainless) indicate that it makes power; you might want to check on one of those locally before paying for overseas shipping... |

I understand this muffler is made by the seller. Aren't Leistritz mufflers stock then this guy cuts it up to a sport muffler config? Is yours a just like the one pictured? If so where did you get it? Thanks! |

stock mufflers are not stainless. the EBay muffler does not claim to be stainless; the ad says it is aluminised. i do not believe Leistritz mufflers (or any of their other exhaust products, which are many) are modified OEM parts. i could be wrong. i used a Leistritz muffler on my ur-GTI and liked it. mine *looks* like the one pictured in the ad. i bought mine from MikeZ about 3 yrs ago; i donno where he got it. here's a thread i found with information. |

Yah, the only stainless is the pipes. The rest is normal rustable steel. As for the oem stuff some have Porsche part numbers so that's why I suggested they made stuff for Porsche. I guess yours is stainless though. Thanks for the info. I'll look into it more. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif) |

Olav,
You might want to try a local contact. My mechanic Tom Martenot (Deutsche Motorsport) in Concord makes these in his shop. I have had mine ~ 5 years...no problems. It qualifies at Laguna Seca >92 db limit. It sounds great. He can be reached at 925-689-0232. Not sure about cost, shipping time, etc. Good Luck, Greg Attached image(s) |

Mueller,
Tom is very good with a torch, metal bender. He opens up a 911 muffler, removes some of the material within - to free up the flow restrictions, welds it shut, adds on the two outlet pipes. I had him cut my exhaust outlets a bit shorter in order to eliminate some of the overhang out back. I do not know how much science vs experience goes into the calc's...my guess is that his experience trumps the science....he seems to know what works and has built quite a few of these. He is very nice fellow...might want to ask him directly. |

Dansk has these mufflers ready to go
(you don't need to open em up etc. or pay someone to do it for ya) Available in steel or stainless The steel ones are cheap and the SS ones are affordable Why reinvent the wheel when you can buy them off the shelf for less (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) |

Come on Jeroen you know the answer to this, we own 914's and off the shelf just wont do. No sir, no thank you, we must yes we must re-invent the wheel to keep the "mystery" and pleasure and the spirit yes the very spirit of the 914 alive! Why it's that very spirit that makes us get into the teener and dream of larger engines with velvet smooth shifters and brakes that could knock the breath out of you while stopping your heart, all the while draining our walletts and removing our sanity and making us look at a 30 year old car with more rust holes then a strainer and say "Hey I can weld in new longs and a new floor and new battery support and it will be good as new." Yeah, spirit (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) |

If you keep the one in the stock location for a total of three....you can cap one one or more for reduction of noise for whatever....like if yer too old like SLITs.

That's the way the factory did the original 911 rallye cars in the 60's and 70's.
Three pipes. one in the normal location and then the twin pipes. It was done this way for sound restrictions during transits between timed stages. Cap the twins for transits for quite time in villages etc. then uncap the twins for timed stages with no noise restrictions. My next door neighbor did this to meet Laguna sound regs years ago. 74 Carrera with 3.2L 3 pipe muffler. open for all other tracks and capped twins with machined and pinned aluminum caps for laguna Worked great! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sawzall-smiley.gif) And yes why make one when you can buy a brand new one of the shelf with no one else's rust on it! I don't think so? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)
I want a car that runs well, is dependable, and I don't have to worry what the last guy did with some part I need, or where he got it. Anyway, I would imagine the cost difference between buying the new one vs. buying a good used can and having it modified would be a wash. I have the Dansk SS one and it is pretty nice; much louder than a stock 2-in/1-out but not terribly obnoxious IMO. The pipes are not spaces as far apart on these "sport" mufflers vs. the "rallye" style.
DaveB @ TRE had one of the 3-outlet, wide spaced versions for sale not too long ago. I believe he makes them at his shop in N. Hollywood and had just done one for a customer who flaked. |
