It depends on the state of the chrome. Actually, the plastic is copper plated, then nickel plated and finally chrome plated. The copper adheres to the plastic better (same for the steel bumpers and the alloy wheel lug bolts), and you may see a hint of blue corrosion. The nickel layer is the bright reflective surface. The chrome itself is almost transparent, and protects the nickel layer from going dull (like a nickel will in your pocket).
If the chrome is poor, then you may have to resort to painting the grilles. The grilles are placed where they are in harms way. I have a nice new set for show and a painted set for driving. |

I had great sucess w/ the a BRILLO pad - they look great. The main ingrediant is "patience."
They are looking sweet - I just asked earlier about the chrome paint job on the inside of the fog light housing - any suggestions? thanks - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) |

Soak them for forever in Simple Green, then polish.

You guys just won't listen. Just try it once with a couple of soft cloths & you will thank me. I've used it for over 30 years with 100% success (other than the fuglies I dumped on DaveP). I even once polished my transaxle with it, but it came out like it was chrome plated! Good stuff - perfect for the area inside the foglight housing. |

Suffice it to say it didn't last (thankfully). Within a month it oxidized back to its former condition, though one heck of a lot cleaner! Took me 12 hours to do the polishing! If nothing else I know I have a pic of my headlight motors after the same routine. I've since let them go back to the tiger stripes. Attached image(s) ![]() |
