Anyone know if the steel roof panel could have been purchased at one time or another to "convert" a targa topped car to a solid roof ??

QUOTE(Mueller @ Sep 27 2004, 01:19 PM) Anyone know if the steel roof panel could have been purchased at one time or another to "convert" a targa topped car to a solid roof ?? no. but i do know that the company that used to make the stamps for the porsche prototypes still has all the old stamps on a shelf. soooo, with enough $$$ you could make yourself a *real* 916 steel roof ... Were they steel, or just steel reinforced, and bolted in place?

A 914 roof doesn't look too complex. I'm sure John Kelly (or another accomplished metal beater) could (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) one out of a some sheetmetal and weld it in...
Would be cool, if only for braging rights |

QUOTE(Jeroen @ Sep 27 2004, 01:27 PM) A 914 roof doesn't look too complex. yupp, would still be cool to use the original stamping, hmmmm, if there's enough demand, i could have someone contact the company and see if we can get a small production run going ... I think it'd be great to add just a bit of reinforcement, as well. A stamped rail along the top of the window to not only hold a seal but also stiffen things appreciably. Some sort of sound-deadening and/or a headliner would be mandatory for a street car, or the steel roof resonates like a drum.
Something to consider when I get around to fixing some of the crappy paintwork on my car. I never take the roof off... |

QUOTE you know, the car is actually quieter with the top off! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) At slower speeds, probably so. At freeway speeds, wind noise is pretty bad even with the window down. I've got tinnitus as it is, my 40+ year old ears need protecting. That's the real reason old people drive big, quiet luxo barges, btw. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) |

Can anyone point to some decent pictures of a 916 that show the roof well? The last time this came up I did a search on the net for references to the 916, but could never find anything that was shot from close enough to show how they did the roof. I'd love to do this to my '72 when I get back to restoring it.

One of the biggest reasons I love this car is the top coming off. I dont think I ever drive with it on. There was that time on the Baja Run II where it was so hot sitting in traffic that the top was the only relief from the sun and heat. But my top is always body colored since black always attracts heat. The car I drove down there was Yellow. Once we started moving again, I took the top back off. |
