Jim,

My relay “clicked” when I applied the 9v battery, confirming the coil worked. If no “click,” I’d check the relay’s coil for continuity (some nominal value more than 0 ohms but less than infinite resistance). As long as it doesn’t appear to be either an internal short or an open circuit it should be ok….

I think.

Maybe.

I can’t believe Mr. Hilger’s shop class was 60 years ago.

How can I test the coil ?

S terminal to ground, run a wire from 56, but don't connect to 12v yet.
You can do this at the battery in the car, or run some wires off the fuse box.

Just touch the wire from 56 to 12v, you should hear (see if the can is still open) the relay click. Repeat the touch/release process several times. With the latching relay you should see the white plastic lever switching positions.

Thanks for the testing info: the relay is dead.

In most cases you would be correct, but this particular latching relay has a resistor in parallel with the coil. So most likely you would get a 'good' reading even with a bad relay coil.

Thanks, that’s good to know!
