Thanks.Everybody in here was less knowledgeable and less skilled at this stuff than I am...at some point. As a retired teacher, I'm used to taking people from where they currently are, and remembering what it was like "back then". I appreciate the help soooo much, and understand the occasional smart ass who has forgotten what it was like back before they were enlightened. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

He's no different than others here , he just wants to get his car running , rolling , stopping very well so he can enjoy the pleasure of driving and owning a 914.

Hurts horribly doesn't it? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hissyfit.gif)

My butterflies "snap" shut beautifully, but if I release them slowly they hang up a little just prior to being closed. I've sprayed and soaked the springs, spindles, etc. and hit them with CRC silicone. Problem? Solution?

Did you remove them from the shaft? If they aren't lined up perfectly in the bore they can hang up. If you did remove them or mess with the screws try this: Loosen the machine screws on both butterflies with them closed. The butterflies will shift just a tad to true themselves up in the bores. Then tighten them back up. See if that helps.

If you never messed with them use some caution. The screws strip easily. They are brass. If you can't break them loose easily don't bother. If you mess them up you'll create a nightmare for yourself. BTDT.

Didn't touch them. Think I'll try some more spraying (carb cleaner) , re-lubing, and "working" them before I try loosening those screws.

IIRC the holes in the butterfly are slotted or oversized. The shaft is counter sunk on the top and threaded on the bottom. You sandwich the butterfly on the shaft. If the screws break loose it's easy to adjust them. If the screws strip you'll know the definition of nightmare. Imagine trying to drill out 4 brass screws deep inside your carb bore. It's damn near impossible to do without screwing something up. The last time it happened to me I ended up buying a new shaft.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I should have the second carb finished and ready for install very soon. My plan is to get the linkage hooked up, and adjusted first. I know I'll need to adjust the linkage becasue I switched to the much thicker phenolic gaskets under the intake runners. Then, get her started (hopefully) before dropping the linkage to balance the carbs.

Make sense?

BTW...any thing I'm looking for with linkage adjustment other than matching angles, simultaneous throttle opening (how do I assess that?), no binding, no slop?

Sounds like a plan, adding the thick washers may not make much difference, I don't recall what linkage style you have - hex bar, not much of a change, other style mounted to a crankcase pivot may need extending slightly.

BTW, I would not touch the butterfly either. Have you checked their alignment? To do this, turn in the slow running screw so that you can fit a 0.004 inch narrow feeler gauge between the bore and the upper edge of the butterfly, as viewed from the bottom of the carb, then check the other butterfly, it should be exactly the same. If they are then you are probbaly fine, if not then you may have to undo the screws and adjust, let us know what you find.
The 4/1000 inch setting is also the correct starting point for the slow setting, the idle and bypass orifices in the barrel are correctly covered or exposed at this point for the slow running setting.

Getting there, take it slowly and you will be fine !

Not sure if i sent you this before, but this is for the hex linkage setup -
