Please define "plugged suction". Yep...my pump looks like crap, but the appearance of the outside doesn't mean much, does it?
Fuel pump capacity issues usually don't show up at idle. The fuel draw is relatively minor. To have it starve at idle seems more like a plugged suction. With that said, your clicky pump looked to be in very bad shape. |

No idea what kind. I had a shot of it in another thread. I'll see if I can find it. It looks like it was sitting in a bucket of shit for a few decades.
I forget if you have mentioned it earlier. What kind of fuel pump are you using? I agree that it sounds like you are draining the carb bowls and then your pump can't keep up. Zach |

Splice the gauge in before the furthest carb from the "T". That way you'll know your pressure is good up to the carb. You'll need to buy the gauge block with 2 fittings for your fuel line and the gauge. Brand doesn't really matter. Just be sure that the gauge glass isn't some cheesey plastic that will crack or pop off in a week.
Plugged suction is anything from a kinked line to a plugged filter or sock. You could even have some old hose that can't handle being under a vacuum. As I recall your pump is by the engine. Your flex line could even be sucking itself closed and limiting the volume. |

I missed whether you changed the fuel filter or not, but if not i'd sure do that; and while you're at it, replace all your fuel hose to go with those nicely rebuilt carbs...

I'm guessing that the gauge block is separate from the gauge, right? Is it a "T"? My pump is right under the hell hole. By "flex line" you're talking about my fuel line, right?

Yep...changed the fuel filter first thing. It wasn't very dirty either (Glass tube w/ replaceable element). Replace my rubber hoses with fresh rubber, or something different?

Since adding the "snake oil" she's smoking...white eye burning stuff, especially on de-cel. Had no oil burning before. I noticed that the "Sea Foam" is a petroleum product (but so is gas, right?)...could it be that crap or the dry gas?

Ken, To late, I was going to say stay away from the sea foam - Works great on FI setups, not so good on carbs, and you will be smoking for days! Common wisdom says a carb setup needs a pusher pump, not a sucker! You are only dealing with up to about 3.5 psi, and that pump ( whatever it came off, looks like an old British Lucas !) will never suck properly. Time to convert to a CB! |

And...while I'm at it, since I can't change the old line from the plastic hose in the tunnel to the fuel pump without the tank being empty, I might as well empty the tank, pull it, replace the sock, put a stainless hose through the tunnel (only need one , right?) and put the pump up front while I'm at it?
Siphon the fuel out (10 gallons right now) and fill my car and the neighbors? How hard is replacing the line in the tunnel ? |

Just get your rear ( the car!) up as high as you can and thread the SS line back in. Do a search, you will find plenty of pictures of the CB pump installed up front. I did the whole job in a leisurely morning - so not so bad. |

You'll end up with something like this. Your local flaps or Napa will have the stuff. You'll need to match the nipple size to your fuel line. It'll be a brass T with NPT for the fuel line fittings and gauge. They make an all in one inline gauge but they are usually cheapos.

So...ran her at idle for almost an hour today in the garage. After about 25 minutes she died, but fired right back up. Upon restart she acted a little starved for about 30 seconds, then ran another 35 minutes at idle. So, took her out for a few miles and she was fine.
Maybe the Dry Gas or Sea Foam worked some small miracles (though she did die once during that idle. Anyway, still gonna re do the pump, lines and pump location. |

Might as well...it was going to happen eventually anyway...just moved it up. I;m so freakin' anal I'll eventually do everything on this car. In fact, while it was idling in the garage, I rebuilt the driver's door safety latch with new roller bushings from (can't remember his name right now) a 914Club vendor.

Drove her 10 miles just now. NO stalling...and the smoking (Sea Foam) has almost gone completely. She ran nicely, but I'm gonna play with the mixture screws again, now that I'm somewhat more aware of what's going on (glad I rebuilt them). No decel pop (must have been the intake with only three bolts on the manifold), and only two small backfires during the drive...nothing significant at all.
If ya'll remember, this all started after a fill up on the way home from CT to MD, in NJ. I'm now suspecting water in the fuel since a can of Valvoline Water Out (as well as the Sea Foam) seemed to work some wonders here. |
