Drove her 10 miles just now. NO stalling...and the smoking (Sea Foam) has almost gone completely. She ran nicely, but I'm gonna play with the mixture screws again, now that I'm somewhat more aware of what's going on (glad I rebuilt them). No decel pop (must have been the intake with only three bolts on the manifold), and only two small backfires during the drive...nothing significant at all.

If ya'll remember, this all started after a fill up on the way home from CT to MD, in NJ. I'm now suspecting water in the fuel since a can of Valvoline Water Out (as well as the Sea Foam) seemed to work some wonders here.

Ken,
I have a car with dual Webers that seems to pop and backfire a lot (especially when gpoing down hills). What did you ultimastely attribute the main cause of the backfiring to? Air leaks?

Air leak for sure. That's the wisdom I gleamed from my bros on this site, and sure enough when I was rebuilding my Webers, I found that the intake manifold on the right side only had three bolts on the head to manifold end. Half of the other nuts were only finger tight...no lock washers or Ny-Locs at all.

Every day, but this is till a "shake down". Hard to believe, but I've only had her three months, and this is still "sorting her out" and making her mine time. Still need to:

* re-do the fuel lines and pump (probably in a few days)
* get the targe to stop squeaking (maybe today)
* re-do dash (winter project)
* strip, clay, polish, wax and touch up some spots on the body (winter project)
* rebuild passenger door lock and safety catch as I did to the driver's
* new horns
* install drain funnels (once I clear out my hole)
* recover seats (winter project)
* sort out suspension...some suspicious clunking noises on turns and bumps

Then it will be drive, maintain and repair as things break!

That's the way it's been for me since about 1970. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif)
