That's the tab I thought you meant...the end that has the split in it...that the rod presses into.

My thought is, that if you submerged the float in water, and saw it was leaking (bubbles) wouldn't you replace it?

QUOTE(SGB @ Oct 8 2009, 10:14 PM) *

You just don't want to get water into a leaky float, then have it slowly creep back into the gas in the bowl.

I'm not a vendor, I did buy fuel line and fittings and venturis from aircooled, net.

The tabs I broke are the ones that HOLD the pin that the float pivots on (two in each carb next to the needle valve), not the little flat tab on the float assembly that contacts the needle valve (the one used to set the float height).

I use gas, and yes....if you see bubbles, replace it.
I have not seen one that is bad unless its from a really crapped out carb full of water and dirt...most of the time the floats on Webers seem fine in my experience...
I still check every one.

So...what's the reason for using gas?

Wasn't in a big rush because the gaskets for the heads to manifolds won't be here until the beginning of the week. I finished cleaning all the parts today. I did it in about 4-5 stages so as not to mix up parts until I really learn them (carb #2). Cleaned and painted the intake manifold for the one side too. Weekends are for riding (MC) so I'll start putting carb #1 back together on Monday. Believe me...I'll be posting every move. The only trepidation I have is about setting the floats...everything else seems pretty simple. I'll be back (best Arnold imitation).

P.S. My best guess is that the carbs will not solve the problem, and I'll be replacing the fuel pump, but just a SWAG.

I don't believe it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

We should start a pool. Something like time before you post about adjusting the linkage and synching the carbs.

Just (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) fun... You're making progress. Good luck.

I've been told that my linkage is a good one, and I didn't need to adjust the lengths at all to drop them from the carbs...had a quick disconnect without unthreading anything. Synching? We'll see.

if the intake manifolds are still off of the engine, check the bottom ends (side to side) with a straight edge. years of over tightening, being dropped, etc, can take its toll. where does the hose coming off of the fill tower vent to?

Good idea...thanks. Just checked and it's straight. The fill tower vents right to where you see it...into the "pit"

you need to figure out a better venting system. the mess will be huge over time. the vapors will be drawn into the heat exchangers and the rest of the related ducting and the oil stench will be forever. clean up will be a total pita. chris folley's canister style breather, cbperformance or bugpack type breather box, or simply a fitting in one of the filtertops and a funtional pcv valve.

Gotcha...glad you noticed. Will something like the EMPI breather box suffice? What would be good for just venting to the atmosphere? I don't wanna put the "stuff" back into my filter tops (carbs).

I'll leave the venting question to the environmentalists, but Kevin is right in that you shouldn't put it into the cooling system of the motor. You'll be sorry when you want to use the heat or your engine temps start to climb because of the oil/grease/dirt all over the case and heads.

If you've removed the carbs and the manifolds there is a pretty good chance you'll have to readjust the linkage. There is enough slop in the mounting of both that the clearances will change after they are put back on the motor. YMMV (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) And you will definitely have to sync the carbs.

I have no heating system, but do want to keep the gunk off the engine.
