Well yes and no to James' idea. The "Half Moons" under the cv bolts are hardened steel. This ring will probably be soft sheetmetal and might allow the cv bolts to loosen. Safety wire the bolts??????????

Probably better not to mess with the cv joint bolts then. This looks like a stellar idea to me. How much does a 911 speedo go for anyway?? What would be the best way to plug the hole in the back of the tranny?

Or consider just getting one of these to convert your speedo cable to a pulse.

Hey Karl,
I like that one !!!! Sorta pricey, but it seems that as long as it's built rugged, it might be more reliable and less prone to damage than a sensor sitting out it the open. No big deal right now, I just bought a new cable a few months ago (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I'm not sure if this is the same unit that North Hollywood or PA speedo sell. Supposedly they sell a VDO brand adapter specifically designed for this!

Karl are you using that VDO adapter? How does it hook up? Do you still need the right angle drive on the tranny?

I am not using it. If someone is seriously interested in using it, I would sugest contacting either North Hollywood Speedometer or Palo Alto speedometer.

I used Karl's approach with a VDO speedo that I got from one of the VW places - The Real Source. All I had to do was to get a local speedo shop to make a short cable to go between the angle drive and the sender. It worked like a charm and was easy to do.
I found it back in their catalog. VDO Programmable Speedometer Kit. Part #309-204 $199.99 www.800luvbugg.com. I think I had to call them to find one in the right size for a 914. The one's in their catalog are smaller so they fit the bug dash. |

Ernie, you're talking about a mechanical cable, not an electrical one, right?

I am still assembling my 914 so my idea is still on the workbench. I am using the VDO electronic speedometer. I purchased a standard GM speedo sender and was pleased to find the mounting thread will fit the 901 angle speedometer cable drive. The sender has a small square key that fits into the GM trans. I had a machinist sodder this square key to the 914 speedometer cable end fitting, a U shaped fitting. Everything fits together and rotates. There might be some long axis play and ware. Hopefully, I can attach a picture of the assembly. The key looks bent in the picture, lense distortion.

Welcome to the BBS Philip.. we kinda have this place locked down. You have to post 10 times before we allow you to post attachments. You can do this several ways. Start a new thread and post 8 more times and delete the thread.. or wait to respond to 9 more threads.
