My friend Tommy stopped by and took a peek at HOWARD's issue(s) and said he'd like to tackle it.

I called Bruce Stone and asked if he had a spare L/R trailing arm to replace the 'bent' one, and met up with him at Callas Rennsport a couple days ago.

De-greased it and shot some black primer on it ...

... then we'll jack HOWARD up, remove the bent arm, swap all the necessary parts and install it to see if it cures the issue (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
...

maybe a dumb question. How would one go about bending a trailing arm?

Spent the afternoon putting the idle air control components on Rusty's EFI 2056 motor.

Attached Image

I need about an hour to finish hooking up the wiring for the idle air control valve and hook pup the relay board and fuel pump. Then I can fire it up!

Mark you plan on keeping it now?
Do you have enough parts to put it back together. That would be nice, but you know you can still come on the runs with the local guys.

Best Bob b
No, gents, I sold most of the upgraded parts that were destined for the car, (a freshly rebuilt 1911, SSI headers, Banana muffler, powder-coated late front suspension, PMB calipers, ATS Classic wheels, LED gauges, etc.). I just thought to at least fix the left rear suspension so it'd be a straight tracking roller again.

It's a shame, as the car is pretty much a 99% rust free chassis - albeit having some dented metal now, I've just lost interest in finishing it.

I still have more nice parts I had purchased for it and I'll get around to posting more in the classifieds soon.

However, I still like open top mid-engined P-cars, so I'm currently perusing the market for a nice pre-owned Boxter (for exclusive use in California since the Cayman has made AZ it's permanent home) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

At least it'll be better than always driving my Toyota truck, or the 'lesbian-mobile' (Subi Outback) to Porsche events (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

When things settle down a bit and I can tie up all the loose ends here, I'll be able to join up with you guys & gals again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif)

Not really....

Rusty asked me to build a new motor for his Aubergine 73. It originally had a 2.0 engine, but somewhere before Rusty got it, the motor was replaced with a 1.7 case running a hodgepodge of parts topped by a pair of Webers. He bought a 73 2.0 engine from Perry Kiehl, and tore it down. Then he asked me to build it for him.

It has taken me way too long to do. I have a full time job in IT, and 3 914s of my own to keep running, plus maintenance on our SUV, our BMW, our Jeep, and all of the other little household items that have to get fixed. But it is finally getting finished. The current plan is for me to test run the motor here and get everything adjusted. Then I will load it into the back of a rent SUV and head to his place in Huntsville on Memorial day weekend. He is prepping the chassis for the EFI conversion engine. The actual installation should be just plug and play. Everything should be synced and programmed before I get there.

The new engine is a 2056. It uses a stock 2.0 crank and rods, a Raby 9590 cam, a complete Raby valve train. IIRC, LN Engineering Pistons and Cylinders, rebuilt 2.0 heads, a lightened flywheel, and a complete Zims EFI conversion kit. The Idle air control parts are a new design by Aaron@allzim.com ( @partsguy22 ) so I ended up making the mounting bracket for it.

We already have multiple tunes for the EFI. I am going to take the tune from @scottthephotog 's car from when he was running his 2056 and plug it into this motor. It should get us 85 to 90% of the way there. Later Rusty can take it to a dyno and have them wring the last of the performance out of it. That is, if he wants to.

If you want to see it, Rusty should be at Okteenerfest this year.

Modifying the exhaust for the header I ordered. It will be interesting hanging this thing in back. No longer have to settle on where the tips ended up with the heat exchangers in place. I’ll be able to move them in for a cleaner reveal.

Mark, I have a sideshift engine support bar if you need one. You will have to stop by and get it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sunglasses.gif)

I had budgeted for a MSDS header for this build. Coveted these since 2017-18. I ordered the 1.65" ceramic coated header today for my car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

Thanks, Paul, but I still have at least one engine support bar, the rubber engine mounts and the front & rear shifting rods here.

Don't know how I ended up with 3 or 4 early mount bars though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) ... so if anybody needs one of those, just come pick it/them up (they're in the Avondale AZ area), or pay for shipping (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Doing a little "anniversary" spring-clean to celebrate 53 years. Cleaned up the engine bay, replaced the air filter elements with new, and did a little top-side maintenance.

Attached Image

Checked carb jetting too, as I 'd been getting some popping when downshifting. Current set up was 2 x Dellorto DRLA 40, with 30mm vents, 55 idle/135 main/180 air correction jets.

I looked back at my records and found that when I was stationed in Seattle (~ sea level), the car had larger idle jets ("65") and still passed emissions testing (HC = 239 ppm, Max CO% = 4.87, Min CO2% = 12.91). I ran that same set-up for the Pacific NW Region's DE events at SIR with good results.

So, being back at sea level here in SE VA, I re-jetted the carbs with the "65" idle jets and adjusted idle mixture; the car seems to run better in mid-range and no more popping. FWIW, I would have tried a size "60" idle jet just to compare, but that set of jets appears to be lost to the ages...or to my age anyways. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

The yellow one is my og 1972. It has an un-touched front.
Black has freakishly little rust in back. So those are the two
I’m using to make one good one. A few years still with the tub
and engine. You know how money is.

Added a tab to either side to pick up the weight in the rear.

I’ll drop a carriage bolt down from the corner of the trunk. Even though I have semi solid mounts, if the engine needs to torque I’m going to sandwich the tab with springs top and bottom, washers and lock nuts. It will still hold the weight but should allow a little torque movement.

Thanks to Marty and the good folks at PMB I was able to get the dimensions I needed for the final cut on the tubes. Same size as the exit of the header.

Spent some time getting her ready for the 1st annual NorCal 914 Festival this weekend. I have been swamped with other stuff and my car has just sat, sadly. I wiped her down, put on a coat of wax, aired the tires and connected the battery tender. 20 minutes later the light turned green and off came the tender. I love the master power cut-off, my battery seems to never lose the charge.

Tomorrow I will clean the windows, vacuum and that will be it. Should be a fun Saturday event and I am also looking forward to the Sunday event at Niello Porsche in Rocklin, which is about 15 miles down the road from me.
