Its flaking off and the red plastic underneath is revealing itself. At first glance it looks like red over spray. I can't get a photo now they are in my attic. Is this common? Time to replace or can the be painted/plated?

pretty typical Andy.
look like this?

I used Aluminum Foil Tape on mine and it worked well.
Other folks spray them with Chrome paint etc...

I painted mine with the 'chrome' spray paint (to code) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

From my scale modeling days, I can tell you that there is a product that helps make metal sheets adhere to plastic. It has been 25 years, but I used it to apply metal sheets, very thin, to plastic planes to make them look like aluminum and other metals.

I can't remember the name, but others may know of it.

roll of aluminum foil tape was about $5. No toxic fumes and took about 1/2 hour to apply to both sides.
And it is definitely more reflective than the old silver paint/red plastic (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

here is a pic of just the running lights after redoing with aluminum foil tape...brake lights are much brighter (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Euro 911, when you painted yours did you drill out the rivets and pull it off and paint it? Or just tape it off and spray?

Just curious. I thought about pulling mine off and checking with some past colleagues and seeing if they can vacuum new foil on it. Not sure how it would look or turn out...

John, Are you thinking of Bare Metal Foil? I am familiar with the name, but I have no experience with using it. I don't know how well it would hold up if applied inside the light fixture housings which are exposed to high and low temperatures and moisture, unlike the environments most model cars and airplanes are stored in. Having said that, the chrome bare metal foil has a pretty good chrome-like appearance which should be quite reflective. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

I don't remember removing any rivets, I think it just came apart with one screw or bolt ... did it back in 2007.

The pic of mine may not look as bright as Dan's for a couple of reasons ... could be ambient light, or maybe someone's standing on the brake pedal? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) ... they're definately much brighter than they were when I got the car.

I think the tape might hold it's brilliance for a longer period of time than chrome paint would. Either method will yield better results than doing nothing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)
