I installed the Fuchs on my 72 914 today. They look wonderful ! The question I have is should I have used spacers ? The back of the wheel is only about 1/4 inch from the calipers. Or is this normal ?

I don't see the problem. If the calipers don't hit the wheels, you have plenty of clearance. The Cap'n

Im confused with what you mean. Is this a major issue when driving the car ? B/c the car is a 72.

Great Thanks ! I will post up a picture later. Just so you know, Fuchs wheels are "hub centric", and '72s came with "lug centric" wheel mounting. There's a good chance you may have balancing problems. The Cap'n I just opened another thread... Where in SoCal can I get someopne to lug-centric balance my Riveras? Nobody I've called so far has the adapters??? Eric |

I'm putting Fuchs on my 1976 with Kumho 165/60/15's alleound. Does this mean that I've hot something else to worry about? I figured spin balancing, an alignment and I'd be good to go. Am I missing anything?

Lugcentric - the mounting lugs center the wheel
Hubcentric - there is a small ring that the wheel centers on, the lugs then just hold it in place. |

The car is a 1976. My parts manual has only 1 part number for the Fuchs. The wheels are on the dcauto.com website (they are the only ones there). HELP! |

Lee,
The Fuchs will fit correctly on your car. I've never had a problem with mounting Fuchs on early cars either. Cap'n, What about the rears. Aren't they lug-centric for all model years? |

Fronts == lug-centric on 70-72 (late 72) cars.
== hub-centric on late-72+ cars. Rears == lug-centric on all 914s. Almost all Fuchs are machined for the hub-centering ring on the late hubs. (There are a very very few out there that are not, they are obviously different when you look at the back of the wheel.) All Mahles should be machined for the hub-centering ring. The ".01" version of the Pedrini wheels are as well; the ".00" version are not. Putting a hub-centric wheel on a hub without the centering ring should give you no more difficulties than putting a lug-centric wheel on that hub. Putting a lug-centric wheel on the later front hub will not fit, unless the wheel or the hub is machined. The ring sticks up too far and the wheel will not sit flat against the hub. Note that the early wheels will fit on the back of a later car just fine. (Been there, done that!) The balance issues that the Kap'n refers to are minor, IMHO, and they apply to any lug-centric hub and wheel combo. However, they are why Porsche decided to go with the hub-centric wheel setup. --DD |

Now, a question: Do the spacers and longer lugs I use on the front to mount the Fuchs that came with my '73 2 liter creat potential problems? Back wheels are unchanged, but in front I've got a 1/2 inch spacer that is cutout like a donut. There is a mild vibration at about 50, but the alignment is good, tires balanced, suspension not loose. Could it be the tires are not really centerd?

Ok, so I think I get hub-centric vs lug-centric with regard to putting the wheels on the car. But... does this mean that the tires shoud be balanced using the lugs vs the center hole of the wheels?

I meant the car, as the answer is OBVIOUS. His car is NOT a '72, and my earlier post clearly described the conditions of fitment. Hope he used the correct bolts, otherwise the rear wheels (and maybe even the fronts) are gonna fall off, sooner or later. As for the later post about the 1/2" spacers, I'd be REALLY LEERY of the use of spacers that thick, because the lug bolts were not designed for that much spacing. The Cap'n |
