Was browsing around looking for something else car related and came across a 'never buy this oil filter' clip. So of course. I watched it. Then watched a second linked one. Both of them came down pretty heavy on the orange FRAM brand. So I go look and sure enough, that's what I put on my -6 a while back.
Guess I figured a name-brand is as good as another.
Has anyone had a bad experience with FRAM, or what is a suggested brand/type for the -6. Still running dino oil if that makes a difference.

If at all possible, I always go with the OEM filters. On my 6 I have a Mahle oil filter. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Thanks. Which number filter? Trying to cross reference and getting a number of conflicting results. Looks like an OC67 which subs to an OC59?

I've wasted too much time watching a least a dozen oil filter comparisons on Youtube. My take away is that there are lots of options for high quality filters but regular Fram filters (and STP) suck and I will never buy one. Both brands make premium filters that are good. OEM is always safest in my book but WIX/NAPA Gold are probably just as good.

OC 61 Mahle stock ,I have a spare however I think that's the bigger version for something like 911S 2.7 which is OC 54,didn't think there is every a reason not to use a larger filter.
Messy bloody thinks to change (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) .

I have the OC59 for my application which is the new number, replacing the OC33 (I believe that was the old number). This number was confirmed by Aase Motors.

I have a ton of insight on this and will tell you first hand that Mahle, Wix, Mann, hastings are the best filters hands down. fram is junk. I have cut apart hundreds of filter when in the light aircraft industry and can tell you the Fram is about as close to junk as possible

And I'm thinking Napa Gold is made by Wix. Good filters either way.

I also steer clear of K&N. Seems they have the same philosophy with oil as they do air - that somehow flow rate is more important than actually keeping shit out of the engine.

Thanks. Mahle are a bit hard to find, or shipping is more than the filter cost. I had heard that NAPA Gold were made by Wix and highly rated. Local NAPA store says they have the 51515 in stock, so I'll head there.

What I suggest to anyone that will listen is to buy 4-6 mahle filters at a time thus making it cheaper.. I am not sure If George offers an oil change kit but FCP euro offers free shipping on a filter, aluminum drain plug washer and 10 qts of oil for about $55 . George probably has something similar.

We used to get them from the local Porsche dealer. They didn’t keep them in stock but got them in a day without a shipping charge.

I use a Royal Purple filter on my dry sump -4 motor after a ton of reading. Probably made by someone else, but it's strong and good. I always cut them open to inspect. Built like a tank.

Well...you can, sort of...here's a pic of what I did to make up paper filters for my /4 and /6. Takes some research on the WIX filters dimensions pages (https://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/FilterBySize.aspx) to find the closest height and diameter of the round filters, then squash it to oval. This worked for the /6 on the left and you can see that I added height via some fuel hose glued to the top to get the lid further from the velocity stacks, also had to put in spacers on the uprights to match....Attached Image
For the /4 I found the closest match on height but had to cut & splice the element to reduce the circumference to fit where the lame K&N was--not elegant, but does the job...
