Well I tried this with my round turn signals just for the heck of it. It did not remove the color but it did however make them look brand new and shiny again so the experiment wasn't a loss.
I think why this worked for you was that the euro lenses you got where clear to start with and then are colored amber at the top where as the US ones are made with amber colored plastic.

Did you have any luck on the tail lights?

Acetone removes the amber off of the the Italian lens very easily. Takes about 30 minutes to do a pair of lenses and leaves no cloudiness.

Be careful with simple green. My little (but aggressive troopies), would put simple green on weapons and they came Very clean, all the way down to the steel. No dirt, no grease, no anodizing, no finish at all. Very shiny, very clean, and useless for their intended purpose. Yes one can be to clean. Be careful out there mates.
