Crikey! (I think that's Australian for...Holy Shit!)
And FWIW I think those were forged JE pistons too. Milt was running high C/R but I know he had it on the juice (110+ octane blend). It was only in the 60's ambient temps that day as well...something musta been really tweaked. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

Let me guess, this is why you have a engine for sale with "0" miles on the top-end?

Chris, they were KB pistons, about $200/set. Doesn't make any difference even if they cost a buck or $600 like JEs. I f'ckedup. Sort of a bittersweet deal, I have more time now than I've had for 2 years and have gotten a lot of things done that needed to be done. I figured it took 8-10 hours to ready a kart for a race. I was spending 40 hours readying the 914 for a non competition track day.
After this debacle, I saw two ways to go, get back into karting, or realize that 30 years of racing is enough. I have taken the second option. You know what? I never quite "got" the 914. It's a big jump from karts to cars. Mike will tell you that the car was put together well. I needed a tuner to help me sort out the carbs and ignition. I can't tell you how the timing became that advanced. As I said, I screwed that puppy until it was dead. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |

I was surprised to see the "ZekeMeister" sold his 914 after taking so much care in building it. Running lean can happen to anyone, and the ZekeMeister admits he should have ade a tuner. How else do we learn? I like the ZekeMeister's style. Keep going, Tiger.

Hey, shit happens....that's why I went out and bought an old exhaust engine analyzer. Proffesional tuners get big bucks because the test equipment is BIG bucks.
Zeke read the plugs, saw what he believed was a good burn...the mains on the 44s are 160s....fat as hell. It went lean at WOT due to advanced spark....looks as if the dizzy may have moved.....it WAS loose. So....ya fix it and move on. I am very impressed with the detail that Zeke did on the car....hell he did stuff that I would never think of doing. I never saw the car before I went down and bought it....but I knew his rep as being meticulous....when tearing it apart, I was in awe of the craftsmanship.....he put a LOT of work into the car. NOW...I'm gonna do a sixer conversion on it. The bulkhead mount and sheetmetal are on the way from Rich Johnson and a REAL 2.0 "S" motor is coimng from Glen Sager. It's a peaky little buzzy motor, but with the small bore, competitive....160 hp dyno'd..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mueba.gif) |

Way to go, Mike. The car deserves a six. They all do.
Those are some mighty fine words you and Steve spoke. Thanks, men. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) |

Zeke,
I feel for the bad luck.. but the good news is that I'm glad mike is going to be putting the car back on the track and that it won't be pushed into a shed to sit and go to waste for 10years..... Mike, I don't know if our paths will ever cross on a track.. but if you ever end up in colorado.. or maybe a 2.0 challenge sometime, I hope we meet in person... We will both have 2.0S motors.... which is cool... (hey do you hear good or bad about henry schmidt at supertec down in your area?) brant |

Brant,
I've met Henry and been to his shop. It's quite nice. He had a Trans-Am BMW there when I was there. I was sweet, signed by some of the drivers, I think David Hobbs and others. He had a 3.8 kit and an original Kremer K5 935 body in there, too. We just did a wheel swap over the phone. He seems to be a nice guy. |

I remember seeing some pics of the car during the build on the bird-board quite a while back, but for some reason Zeke never posted too many pics So Mikey... Shoot some pics of the car and share some of the detail Zeke put into it!!! cheers, Jeroen |
