Today, I was contacted by my insurance agent requesting the value of my 914. I have no idea what to tell him. I have been following values however since my is modified, I have no idea. I really don't care what it is worth because the car is worth a million bucks to me. I do not plan on ever selling my 914.

I think that he is requesting the value because there is a new program that will increase my coverage and decrease my rates however I think that the car must be worth more than $5k.

Car info-
1973 914 (setup for autox)
"10 foot" paint (looks great from 10 feet, looks ok from closer- a few chips here and there)
As close to no rust as 914 gets
Pretty much the entire car is either brand new or freshly rebuilt with the exception of the paint (that will occur next winter)
1.8 base engine converted 2.27l (78.5mm crank/96mm jugs)
2.0l heads
dual weber 40 idf's
msd 6al
ext oil cooler
adjustable koni's all around
Fiberglass bumpers
Yes the 2.0l fuchs in the pics are fake, I do have originals
(there are many other changes but the above is the major stuff that I can think of)

The interior of the car is very clean and looks nice however it is not even close to stock. I do not have a pic. There are two corbeau racing seats, momo steering wheel, sabelt harnesses, no carpet, a bunch of gauges and thats about it.

The pics are from a few weeks ago. I have several different exhaust other than pictured. I also do not have the passenger seat mounted.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cool looking car. Definitely north of 5K. How much do you want it to be worth? Is this an agreed value policy? If so, you want to place that value at a point that will cover any loss. You could get it appraised or determine a number you'd be comfortable with if it was totaled.

Motor alone is probably close or 5K, insure it for 10K. Not really much premium difference I would think.

I am not certain however I think that he was asking me the value to see if it was more than 5k. If it is more then 5k then it qualifies and we would need to come up with the actual value. If I recall correctly, he told me in the past that if the car was worth less than 10k then I could just give him a number, if it was more then he would need to have it appraised.

As to Ins. value the Nov. 2008 issue of Excellence on page 128 list the value of a 73 914 -4 , 2 liter at 12,992. in So So condition,excellent condition at 19,775.
With the drop in the market since then, and your extra equment some where in the middle. Write Excellents back issue dept. and get that issue and go for the top.
All they can say is No,then you negotitate ! With that article ,i bet you will come out a lot better. Explane to them who Excellence is.

yep as dave said it's all about price varification/documentation. if it's agreed value, shoot to the high end. the car market tho seems to have taken a 50% +- hit like houseing IMHO. insurance has been butt sore on some cars payouts in the past when values were going stupid crazy, i see why they're all going to agreed value. my old mustang i just sold at barrett-jackson netted me WAY less than the agreed value i had on it, thats how bad the car market is now.

ithe 914 sure looks solid on the outside, from that limited info. i would guess you could sell them on up to 9 or 10k (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) do the leg work for them, it makes there job easier and is usually more $$$

Another approach is stated value/agreed value - where you estimate what it would cost today to reproduce what you done to the car & buying another "core 914" as a project car, plus labor to have it done by others. A local shop could give you an estimated value - both mechanical & body work.

The was another topic on here started by someone asking about insurance companies, which had a lot of good info. Also, shop around, because a lot of companies offer classic car policies - including AAA (at least here in SoCal).

I would and have paid several thousand dollars for a 90% rust free chassis. Add interior and new fresh engine and mechanicals and your way north of $ 5K. The problem is this market. There have been some very nice cars for sale here that have lingered in the classifieds for months. I only have so much money and time to travel and get cars. I would love to buy them all.
