Does anybody know if VW bug valve retainers will work on a Type 4 engine? My neighbor just ordered a set of chromoly retainers for his bug. He decided not to use them and asked me if I wanted them (he will return them if I don't). Since I am redoing my valvetrain, it is good timing if they would work.

Also, when choosing what valve springs to upgrade to, what seat pressure should I look for. I am building a 2.27l auto-x engine.

Yes with T1 springs... but not really worth it unless you're going with dual springs.
If you are you must use T1 springs, shims, hardened keepers, cut for the dual springs and trim the guide tops. Then you must measure the lift and check for coil bind. You will also have to use Cr-Mo pushrods and 911 adjusters with 1.7 rocker arms.

Sounds like a pain. Retainers are not too expensive so i'll just buy a set.

THank you
