Howdy all! I just bought my 3rd 914. The first was my first car, I picked it up 5 years ago for $1000 and it's still my daily driver ('74 red car in pic). The second is a '72 5 lug project that I'm selling (see classifieds) because of the car that spawned this thread! This new car will be named New Blue, or Bluetiful, or a much better name if I can come up with one (taking suggestions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) ). It's a '74 project with FG flares, 5 lug setup, new paint, ?orange? roll cage, and a rediculous amount of loose parts. Oh yeah it's got a 911 Drum E-brake setup that I will be installing and documenting..if I can figure out how!
First of a mighty barrage/broadside of newb questions: do I have the right flywheel? It's 215mm with about 130 teeth, no separate ring gear. The pressure plate part # fits a 2.0L 6 cylinder...how can I determine if I need a 'conversion' flywheel? Yes I will be running a rebuilt 901 box....for now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif) Okay onward with the pics! Let me know what you think of it (good and especially bad/suggestions and such). It needs a ton of assembly work no doubt! Cheers, Brent (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) Attached image(s)

Oh the engine is a 2.7L that's been rebuilt at some point in the past...casesavers and stuff have been done. I don't know anything about these except that they look awesome, and it should be fun installing it. The PO already welded the Rich Johnson mount in, and put a Benz oil cooler up front with ducts running from the cooler box to the front brakes...not sure how effective this will be. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)
The wheels are some type of 3 piece fuchs replicas. They are very wide (9 or 10 inch) with some crazy dish out back. The PO said he had to widen the flares by an inch or two to get the wheels to fit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) Attached image(s)

Anyway it should be a fun build...I'm trying not to spend a whole lot of money..haha. Luckily I have a /6 fender oil tank already. I need:
-Conversion tin -Conversion flywheel maybe?? -conversion throttle cable, linkage? -Oil thermostat? -90 degree bend fitting on oil cooler (if this is steel I can weld it) -90 deg bend oil line under engine -Carter rotary fuel pump -carpet set -front porsche badge -914-6 side shifter straight linkage bar (I'll make this) -breather setup of some kind? -battery One of the pics shows a GT lid that's mostly finished. Here's the flywheel shots. I know I should look for a part # starting with 901 on the back of flywheel but I'd rather not take it off if y'all can confirm it's good to go. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif)

New Sachs pressure plate and clutch disk...the disk does slide on the splines of my 901 tranny which is a good sign I think.
Anywho this is the last group of pics for now. The last shot shows my current "Scuderia de Porsche". My other cars consist of a turbocharged/megasquirted type 4 sand rail and a '64 VW split window Deluxe bus undergoing restoration. I'm 22 years old...having so many projects does not bode well for my later years. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Attached image(s)

Looks good, other than the cage. Too bad it isn't built further back with the back pad clearanced because then you wouldn't have to see it from outside the car, and your passenger might actually be able to sit in the car.
I love the headlights that you are running, but they have always been on my bugs or Rabbits. I don't think they really would do much for a 914 because when your headlights were off you wouldn't have turn signals that were visible. And your front tires are on backwards... |

Indeed the cage is unique, for better or worse...
Don't know my plan with the headlights yet...maybe they'll come on when the headlights and fogs are on. I was wondering who would notice the damn tires! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

The flywheel is correct for the conversion. Engines up to and including the 2.7 used the early 901, 6 bolt flywheel. After the 2.7, Porsche went to a 9 bolt flywheel. Stock 2.0L /4 clutch is the same as the early /6 these days. 6 spring friction disk.
The stock 2.7L flywheel can be used, but you need a '70 - '71 only, 911/901 transmission with the "pull" type clutch. Ignore this method. You will need: 1.) The oil lines. Tank to oil pump inlet. This line should be two piece so that oil changes can be made easily. 2.) Scavenge line from outlet on case to a thermostat to front oil cooler & back to oil tank. 3.) 914/6 engine tin. Front piece needs to be cut in half as it has to be installed after the engine is in place ... won't clear the RJ mount when installing the engine. 4.) Oil cooler need to be modified with a 90 degree bend. It is aluminum. Set the connector back slightly so the valve cover can be removed for valve adjustments. 5.) The case "oil" breather connects to the oil tank via a hose .. no additional "breather" needed. 6.) Throttle linkage you can get from Rich Johnson. 7.) Front Porsche Badge ... you must be suffering from "identity crisis". 8.) Most recommend a second oil thermostat (Mocal or ?) for faster engine warmup due to the front cooler. I don't use one. The above is a start. |

Wow, nice project! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif) Someone spent a lot of time and $$$ to get the car to this point. Should save you a few years before getting on the road. John |

Wow Brent! Wow...Now I'll get to watch that big blue ass in front of me at the Dawn Patrols... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)
Should we start taking bets now that you get this on the road before we see RiqueMar? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) Those rear wheels may be 11"s? Look wide as hell! Chris @ Tangerine has the J tubes for the 911 ebrake set up, once you have those you're golden... http://www.tangerineracing.com/brakes.htm#911 e-Brake Let me know if you need a hand on any of it, I'd love to see it in person, I'll PM you my contact info. Between you, Ethan and Kent I'm really going to have to up my game. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) Congratulations on the new purchase! *jealous* |

Looks like it's going to be a fun project! I think you do have a lot of the parts you need, and the flywheel should work fine. I would also perhaps suggest a Mocal thermostat to help with the oil cooling and warm-up. Do you have the proper heat exchangers or headers?
Those wheels to look nice, and they definitely are wide enough! I've always like the look of the Fuchs centers with a multipart rim. The only suggestion I would make is to forget the front Porsche crest. These cars never came with them, and it's fun to make people guess. I have a 2.7 conversion, and it's a blast to drive. If the engine has been properly built, you should have no problems with it. Enjoy your project in good health! |

Further,
The fitting on your oil tank with the hose barbs sticking out is not a stock piece. It appears they put the oil cooler adapter (screw on type) on the oil filter console. If the barbs aren't -12 (1/2" min) it will restrict oil flow back into the tank. Valve covers are stock, not Turbo and they are aluminum. |

Nice Find!
The wheels look to be Compomotive made in England - Probably 8" and 10". They used BBS Motorsport rims that are still available. I have a pair of 16x8 wheels I have been trying to find a pair of 16x9 wheels to make a set. |
