I own a 914/4 2.0 and have always wondered if I could find a 914/6 engine, would it just bolt right in the existing space, or does it involve a major overhaul.

It will bolt on with about $4000 in conversion parts, a welded on motor mount, plus the price of the engine and probably about 100 hours of work.

The going estimate seems to be around $10,000 to do the conversion. But of course you'll want to do something with the brakes and suspension... It's a slippery slope, with no end in sight. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

yes, it bolts right in, with an appropriate motor mount. yes, it involves a pretty major overhaul - depending on what you're after. you -can- do it with "just" the engine, (and mount), oil tank and plumbing, tach, and exhaust -- but most people aren't willing to stop there, and want to do the complete "conversion" with 5-lug wheels, suspension, and so on.
if you know what you're doing, figure it'll take six months. if you think it can't possibly take six months, figure on a year. |

I have a 3.2 injected combo coming out of a 9146 conversion car that will include EVERYTHING needed to convert a 914 4cyl to a 3.2 9146. This is flywheel/clutch/brain/harness/fuel pump/bolt in cross bar mount/9146 oil tank/lines/factory 6 cooler/headers/factory 9146 tin/blah blah... 12k for everything. That is NO labor. The car is getting a V8.

If you're planning on putting a stock 914/6 motor in your car then don't. Get yourself a 2270 four cylinder instead. It's plug and play baby! 160 hp is a hell of a lot in a 2000 lb car.

QUOTE(Brad Roberts @ Jul 31 2004, 07:29 PM) Cause they dont know what they are doing or what they need to make it happen ? yes - the original question was not how long would it take an experienced conversion specialist, it was how long does it take the person who knows nothing about Porsches to do it himself. it only take a few small parts you didn't know you needed and had to order from a dealer or a specialist to tack on a couple of months. i know YOU can do it in way less time - you've been down this path before. |

Or just buy a running conversion for less money than it takes to build one. If you still want a project, find a conversion that needs work. Take my car for example, It runs great, has all factory /6 parts, but the body is a bit iffy though not unsafe. Not sure what the price of cars like this would be these days.
