Sorry for the crappy pics. Shot 'em fast for the sake of the question.
A member here (thanks Doug!) hooked me up with some good vent tubes/door handle recesses to replace the rotten ones in my car. ![]() I'm cleaning them up and removing the sealer, etc. How are the oval ends of the tubes fastened to the inner ply? It appears there's an oval inside an oval (2 plys) if that makes sense. Are they spot welded together? Brazed? Friction fit? ![]() I'm trying to get the oval end of the tube out of the inner skin while keeping the round end attached to the jamb end. |

"Friction and brazing". So if I hit the edges of he oval with an abrasive disc carefully but enough to remove any brazing, I should be able to get them apart?
I see the spot welds on the forward facing flange where the weather stripping would be affixed. |

Depends on the car & the level of focus of the builder on that day.
Ive scabbed some that were hardly attached & others that were SERIOUSLY attached. |

I hit the oval lip a bit with a wire wheel and it didn't polish up like brass--it shined up like steel weld. And it is a bit thick and globby in places.
What's the best way to approach separation? Careful grinding/sanding? |

See my other post "The other hell hole". My vents look like the ones Scotty was replacing in the pics he posted. Donor parts look really good now that I've got most of the paint and sealer off of them. |

I've got a piece just like that, now blasted. There is a mig bead around the lip, all the way around. I'm only going to take off the rear half of mine and reuse the front half on the piece, so I'm going the section it which should make it easier, to just get off the 'back' part.

be careful when welding that area. I have done a few and the brazing is inconsistently used amongst the spot welds

I was wondering if those in the door are for the purpose of when closing the door, so the air in the cab has somewhere to go to so it will close easier, or is it for some other purpose?

I'm doing the same--so you're going to cut little radius cuts around the oval to remove the rear "skin" and preserve the tube intact? I guess my next problem will be removing the old tube from my car while preserving the inner skin below the seatbelt top bolt with the oval neck. |

I always presumed it had to do with relieving pressure when closing the doors which is a must if you have frameless door glass. |

Its also used to relieve pressure so the fresh air fan or the heater fan actually works. |

I just took the tube out of my car. Here's the donor part. The round end is brazed.
![]() The oval end you can see a gap in the weld the 2 layers. ![]() ground them down then used a rather blunt #3 flat full tang screw driver and a hammer. ![]() Where it resisted, I ground more, it came out without much struggle. ![]() I'm going to wait to do the donor and fit it up along with the fender. Seems easiest to replace that whole corner with the door handle inlet and all rather than just the tube. |

Thanks for nothing. Now I've got to explain to my wife why life as we know it cannot be sustained without a blasting rig! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

The same part before may help you make your case, pretty scary looking, but better than the originals. They cleaned up pretty well. I got that far wit a heat gun and crew driver/ scraper.

What media did you use to clean up the donor parts?
