Saw a '75 914 door sticker VIN that starts 53520 instead of the usual 475xx. What's that about?

Could be a replacement issued by a state DMV?

States don't usually use a factory compliance sticker.

Looked odd to me when i saw it.

Very bizzarre. There was a recall for 914s built in 9/74 that had labels indicting 9/75, those labels were to have been replaced. This label is clearly mis-VIN'd, otherwise it looks real.

Isn't this a Scirocco (type 53) compliance sticker?

If you look at the top right hand corner, it almost appears that there might be another sticker underneath it.

I just snapped a picture of my 75 and it looks substantially different.

The GVWR is all wrong too.

Looks like you may have recovered someone's stolen vehicle that was cloned with possibly another VIN. Possibly a Scirocco?

It's a little tricky as VW vins back then didn't contain much information, but Mr.242 seems to be on to something

first two digits is the model, third digit is the year, 4th digit is a check digit and everything after that is sequential production number.

53 is a scirocco, 5 is a '75 year.

See post #10 above with a picture of my sticker. The weights are exactly the same, but the layout of the sticker (wording) is completely different. Mine has never been painted.
