Flanged nuts that take a 10mm socket. This sounds WAY easier to work with. Anyone try them?

Can't wait to try these but the 914 stainless heat exchangers will need a washer under the flanged nut. The flang will dig into the sharp edge of the metal loop that the stud goes though and bind up the nut. You'll think it's tight but it isn't.

I believe IIRC these are exhaust nuts from an Audi V8.

If they're from Audi that would explain that price. John at Aircooled.net is a smart guy. He's mostly T1 but not like the VW "emporiums" where you can get lots of bad EMPI Chinese chrome. He doesn't carry crap and he's been around, so look through the rest of his site, you'll find other cool stuff. Lots of knowledge and good advice with no BS, he's one of my "go to" guys.

I bought a box of 100 similar ones made of copper back quite a few years ago from a repair shop in Nebraska.

Wish I bought 2 boxes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif)

I agree with reharvey, needs washers for SS exchangers

I seriously doubt the nuts you bought were copper, which would be a really poor choice of material for nut. Way too soft, it would be likely to round off while being tightened, or to fracture if it were hardened. They were most likely the everyday 12 or 13mm wrench size copper plated steel locking exhaust nuts used on BMWs and some water cooled VWs. Porsche and VW never used locking exhaust nuts on air cooled engines, and I don't recommend the use of such hardware at my shop.

I personally hate those damn copper clad locking nuts. The deformation is enough to pull the stud instead of the nut coming off half the time. I like the ones ACN sells much better.

I used to use those nuts as well, and they're solid copper. You're right, they're soft and easy to round. I think they're an alloy though, because they are harder than regular electrical wire copper. You still only get a use or two but they don't rust like most other nuts, so it's a tradeoff.

They're German, aftermarket not OEM, and big in the VW scene, so I'm surprised they never showed up in your shop. The ones from Aircooled.net are better.

Which nuts do you recommend for a -6? Where can they be purchased?
