likely not hot enough, ran it for 15-20 min.

checked compression. Plugs are in the picture Left to right 1, 2, 3, 4 also.

The 1974 had the lowest compression (right?). So is this low?

Wouldn't worry about it, still have lotso good miles left in the 1.8.

Doesn't sound too bad to me. Except for #1, the plugs look good (maybe a little light). The lower compression in 1 probably explains the darker plug. Main question is, how does it run? Are you burning oil? You don't want to let #1 get any lower. If you squirt a little oil in 1 does the coompression come up? That would spot the lower compression to rings or valves.

Burns no oil. i am planning on NOT rebuilding this winter.

Focus is other stuff. I'll check leak down after i pull the engine.

If it not your rings it could be a problem with your valves. When was the last adjustment? A valve may be a bit too tight and not completely closing. Much worse would be a chipped valve. I would check the valve adjustment and also retest with a little oil in the cylinder.

Don't worry about it. Leakdown is a diagnostic tool for finding where the leak is (exhaust, intake, rings, etc) in a leaky cylinder. I'd just adjust the valves when you get it back on the road and then redo the compression check with a fully warmed up engine.

Two words. Valve adjustment. Like the others have said, misadjusted valves will wreak havok on your engine performance, proper idle, starting, gas mileage, etc. And the most feared of them all, a dropped valve seat. Carnage beyond description!!!!
