Mike,

Your DVD's on gearbox rebuilds are so instructive. How about one on gearchange adjustment?

I know you are over explaining the procedure over and over and your notes supplementary to the video are well written, but a picture has the greatest likelihood of producing the 'aha' moment.

I have been all over my linkage - multiple trips up and down the street with crunching gears bringing startled neighbours to their front fences, babies crying and dogs barking.

It seems as though the adjustments required are quite minute but to see it actually done would be of immense instructive impact.

Hope you can oblige. It may help me regain some goodwill with my neighbours and also recapture much loss of face.

Thanks

David

Not likely anytime soon. Too busy with life changing events and my day job (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

There are other methods. Perhaps you would do better to follow the Chris Foley method? It uses bungee cords. Do a search here as it has been outlined a few times. My method works for me and others, but it is not the only answer to the question by a long shot.

Not to put any additional pressure on Mike, and not knowing either the PITA or cost to create a video, I'd buy another Dr. Evil video in a heartbeat.

Just saying Mike.

I think Dave has one with Zach and ScottyB as guest stars.

I just viewed the tranny video (no crude porn jokes now...) and it's great. And yes, I'd buy the proposed shi(f)tter video as well.

As a newbie of less than a full year with these teeners I never thought that this shifter thing would be such a focus. I mean seriously? Buying a practice car to perfect the art of 914 vague shifting? Bushings this, fluid what and side that. And I just bought this thing cause it had a cheap VW engine, got great mpg, drove well in the curves and could drag the hardtop with me. Who knew the extras that came along for free?

The work it took to produce a quality video is all credited to cupomeat (Eric). He is an amateur producer/director/actor/mechanic and his little company has won awards for their work. We actually shot the rebuild DVD set in one day. I drove to Brigantine, NJ from Hershey, PA and had RJMII tagging along for the ride. Eric then spent lots of free time going over the footage and making if presentable. He also sourced the music, and the actress that is featured that I have never met. I was just the focus, but the work was all Eric.

That being said, a video to show how to adjust the shifter would not be too hard to do and I would be glad to just cobble it together and put it on youtube for free. However, you could not have picked a worse time for me to do this as I am working my ass off in my day job, have a back log of rebuilds to finish, am selling my house, buying another, moving 200mi away, starting a new job, etc. So, I'll put it on my to do list next to "Climb Kilimanjaro" and hope it gets done sooner than that task (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Oh ya, and Eric did not ask for any $$ for his time and effort. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumb3d.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif)

Mike,

Thanks for your response. I hope all goes well with the move and new job and understand the cluster bomb you are experiencing.

One wonders how Hans and Fritz did the adjustment on the Porsche assembly line in the 70's. I am sure the 914's went out the factory gate with perfect gear changes.

In due course it would be good to see the video

Thanks again

David

This is actually a very simple job. I've done it several times and if I can do it... etc. etc. There is a procedure in the Haynes manual for pre 1973 and from '73 on that I use and it works great.

Time to 'fess up.

I had numerous attempts at adjusting the linkage but, thanks to Elliott, I followed the Haynes method of adjustment (didn't know it existed until Elliott mentioned it) and found that the upshift from 1st to 2nd was Ok and the other gears were OK but the downshift 3rd to 2nd was crunch central.

Had the 'aha moment. Realised the synchro on 2nd was buggered. I hadn't driven the car when I bought it and didn't rebuild the 'box.

The upshift from 1st to 2nd has falling revs to match the speed of 2nd gear and so no crunch. However, to match the speeds of the gears on the downshift from 3rd to 2nd requires a blip on the throttle to match the revs.

I now drive the car like a crash box. Old fashioned double de-clutching up and down and it drives beautifully.

Will rebuild the box (Dr Evil DVD to be the instruction material) in due course.

Thanks for the responses

David
