I am updating the sound in the orange 75. The factory speakers had crumbled. I pulled them out and went in search of some replacements. We all know that the speakers on the 914 were an odd duck mounting size. You have to also keep in mind that the speaker has to be low profile to clear the side wall. I found a set of Pyle coaxial speakers (4x6) that fit the objective. Of course, the speakers and mounts were not going to be plug and play but I found a way to make for a nice factory look fit.
I took the speakers apart and checked the mounting out. Mounts with grill would fit in the stock location mount with a little modification. I ground off about a 1/4" of plastic on each end of the mount to fit inside the speaker housing. Marked the mounts for notching and got out the files. Used a V file to start notch and then a round file for the mounting slot. Put the speakers back together and mounted them in the factory holes. I need longer screws. so I used the front turn signal lens screws, they were just the right length. I broke the speaker mounting clips in half and used it to secure the speaker mount to the factory grill. Attached image(s) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Looks good, where did you buy the speakers from, were they expensive, I will be on a look out for a pair to do the same.
Great job Mark ! |

Not sure I follow, are you saying you can make them fit with the
grills fully screwd down? If so I will do this too, my old speakers are dying. |

Yes, they will fit with the grill covers on the speaker. I will add some more pictures in the morning.

They are what I would call average. Nothing exceptional. A lot better than the factory paper cones though. I got the speakers off Ebay. Around $30 with free shipping.

My recollection is the clearance in the back is a good part of the issue. It would be nice to have a speaker that would fit.

These fit really well BUT you have to do the modifications as shown.

I've had luck with 4x6 plate speakers in my car...no modifications or clearance issues.
I have old Infinity Kappa 4x6 plates in my car. I also have a set of the 6.5" plates and speakers in my parts loft. I haven't decided on which route to go. |

Walmart off the shelf 200 watts max $25 pair bright red centers. Trimmed all the edge plastic off and added washers to the mounting screws to catch the lip. Fit the grill and space. 2 years now working fine. Average sound quality.

I just got a set of these Pyle speakers for my car. I like that we can maintain the stock enclosure and still fit the supplied speaker grill behind that enclosure.
I am not an audiophile so this will be plenty for me. No additional holes going in the doors or anywhere else. |

Dragging out old topic. I am going to do a updated 3 way 240 W Pyle 4 x 6 speaker (PL463BL) next week when they arrive. Hopefully they will work just like the old ones did for that factory look with good sound.
