I'm hooking up my shifter so I can drive my car but I have a clearance issue with the firewall bushing. The gears the require the shift rod to slide forward, 1,3,5, will not fully engage. My car is early with a sideshift trans. I have a Tangerine Racing firewall bushing installed. Do I have the wrong part?
I pulled the shift rod before I took the pics, but it is definatly hitting. I machined the end for a little more clearance, but it needs more. Any Ideas? ![]() |

This probably isn't your issue but when I installed mine, I accidentally flipped the bearing in the spherical mount when I was lubing it. It seems to stick out farther more one way than another. I re-flipped the bearing and reinstalled and it was better. Like I said, may have just been my problem and Chris Foley will be the man with the answers.

The bearing appears to be installed correctly.
Its a close fit no matter what, but some people do have interference. There are variables including gearbox wear or shift fork alignment that may add to a lack of clearance. The first thing to try is trimming material off the front of the knuckle. With no length adjustment on the shift rod under the engine, the next step is to pull the engine/transmission slightly rearward on their mounts. |

I decided to drill another set screw hole for the back shift coupler about 2mm forward of the original. Worked perfectly.
