The 915 trans came in a 4 speed besides the 5 speed. Yes, 930 trans were 4 speed up until 87 or 88 when Porsche updated it with a 5 speed.

You could get a 4 speed in a 911 for years, but not in 1983. If it is definitely from 1983, it's probably a 930 transmission, which is completely different from the 911 transmision of the same year.

Posting the type number and serial number will let us tell you what it is.

Well, yeah, that helps. It's going to be a 930 gearbox. Not a good choice if you want to put it into a 914.

If you are getting crazy you can use a 930 flipped upside down a'la 935, you have to cut out the trunk, figure out a linkage, mounts, etc.
A lot of engineering. Flipping the diff you have to remove too much material. But the whole box flipped upside down you could run the box as is, a 930 is a stout box for sure.

Talk to Matt Monson if serious, he has researched this mod.

If you have a chance of a 930 gear box, it might be worth it just to flip it ( no Pun Intended) they are very hard to find and us V-8 guys dream of having one. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)
Let me know if it becomes available (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grouphug.gif)

I don't know where you are finding these boxes, I'm imagining that you don't want to tell, but there is one porsche breaker in TO that I would not trust. He sells junk at gold prices. Smells like Nineafart. Also remember that a 930 may have seen a rough life.

If anyone is interested I can get you a fully rebuilt 930 box for $5K canadian, I think thats just over $4k US. Fully rebuilt with factory LSD, stock gears, new brake bands, dog teeth and slider on 3/4 the rest speced out good, new gasket set. I think you may know the builder (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I know what ya mean about nineapart. They are the ones tharmt want 3 grand for a 915.
The possible 930 is almost a 7 hr drive but a good deal.

The 930 will most likely need brake bands, dog teeth and slider on 3/4 gear, plus a gasket set you are talking over $1K US in parts.
If 1/2 is gone as well the "good deal" case could cost you an extra $2K
930's wear out opposite of a 901 which wear out 1/2/3. There is no way to check this if (out of car) without cracking the case.
Also not all 930's are factory LSD.

If you want to change ratios, gear sets will cost you $1200 US each set from GBox or Albins.
I know this because I've rebuilt and changed gears on a few.
