My speedo won't work unless I give the glass a knock or go over a pot hole on the road , what could be causing this

The bits inside are gummed up.

Does the odometer still count up? If it only does when the speedo is working, then it could be a problem in the cable or angle drive or other such. Bug if the odometer goes up and the speedo needle doesn't move, something is messed up inside the speedo housing.

A VDO repair shop should be able to fix it. Or you can try taking it apart yourself and cleaning up stuff.
