Alright, I have Jorge at European motor works in CA handling my 2056cc engine build. So now I need to see if my existing transmission is still healthy or needs a refurbish. Question is for you guys in 914world is 1. Who have you guys sent your tired ole 901 transmission for a rebuild? 2. Is there any advantage to finding a used 915 transmission and having it rebuilt instead? 3. Is it really an improvement worth pursuing or is it a waste of money or not worth it?

There's no reason to even think about using a 915 engine on a 914-4 engine.

Heavy (120-140lbs vs 75lbs), expensive $10-15K, A lot of work and wrong gears for a four cylinder.

Just get your trans looked over and touched up as needed by a reputable shop.

The transmission guru is Dr Evil at Evilwerks LLC. He used to be a very frequent poster on here until his life got too busy. You can probably find him in the Vendor Members section. I took one of his seminars and rebuilt my sideshift 901 transmission a few years ago. Highly recommend him.

I don’t plan on tracking the car. I just want to enjoy driving back roads on the weekend. What started as a simple oil leak at the oil cooler seals led to dropping the engine… and the rabbit hole of new clutch while I was at it…etc

Now I'm sending my case to European Motor Works in CA and building a 2056cc. So, while the case and tranny is separated I figured it would be smart to have the tranny looked at and see what needs to be refurbished after 40 or so years of driving. I’m looking at getting the Rennshifter and Tangerine Racing shifter mods. I like the quirky dog leg transmission, just want to make sure it’s happy with the new engine.

My 70 is getting an electric motor.But, I kept the transaxle (because Porsche drivers like to shift!). Box was rebuilt once to A-F-M-S-X. I took out the X and replaced it with a ZD stock 5th gear, hoping to extend my range.

Get a copy of Dr Evil's transmission rebuild CD and do it yourself. It is not difficult. You just have to pay attention.It is a good idea to look through your transaxle to make sure it is not going to blow up as soon as you put the new engine in. That would suck.

You will usually need 1st, 2nd, 3rd synchros and 1st gear slider just to freshen up. Start looking for parts deal or purchase from Dr Evil.

Easier to just let Mike perform the task. He will more than likely have replacement parts on hand. Spares you the ordeal of sourcing components and paying to ship them. You won't know if you made an error until you try to drive your car. No good? Out comes the trans.
