Looking for usable 914-6 rear brake covers (aka protective plate), quantity 2, part number 901-352-801-21. OK if they need to be stripped for plating, but need to be free of structural issues. Thanks.

Here's a photo of the type that came off the car.

The ones that were on the car were solid. I added photo to my original post.

Good to know. Perhaps the ones on the car are not original / appropriate? The parts catalog lists two part numbers:
  • 901-352-801-21 Protective plate 914-6
  • 914-352-801-00 Protective plate
The top part number is the one displayed and the drawing shows it with vents. I assumed that the 901 number meant it was a 911 / 914-6 shared part but I can't find it in the 911 parts catalogs for 1969-73.

An interesting thread seems to conclude that 914-6 were not vented, but an unresolved question on why the separate part numbers. Perhaps the 914-6 diameter being larger to accommodate the 911 rotor? The diameter on ours are roughly 305 mm.

I have never seen slotted rears on 914-6. Maybe used on GT's with vented rotors. Stock 911 rear is vented however it mount is wider than 914 rear hub.

Found this on Ebay

Thanks. I've been watching that listing. I'm not sure who made them but looks to me like there are some subtle differences in the shape. Makes me leery of buying from Germany given the cost of shipping and a potential return. It is probably my fall-back plan if I can't find some reasonably priced in the States.

914-6 rear shield is unique and different from both 914-4 and all 911s.

Dennis I have (1) spare NOS 914-6 shield, I may part with.

Regarding vented rear covers they were used on the 916Attached Image

For anyone else than may go down this road, the 914-6 and 914-4 rear brake plates are subtly different. The radius of the outside bend is larger on the 914-6, making it slightly larger. I noticed a reference to this, but it didn't get it until I had one of each in my hand. The 914-4 will stack / fit inside the 914-6 plate, but not the reverse.

Very difficult to tell unless you know what car they originally came from or you have the two side-by-side I think.

Two different factories, two completely different parts. Thanks for the side by side comparison. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

The changes you illustrated are because rear 914-6 discs are slightly larger and wider, thus the rear cover is unique as I mentioned earlier in this post.

914-6 rear disc 286 mm Diam, 10.4 mm thick
914-4 rear disc 283 mm Diam, 9.4 mm thick

Porsche was a stickler for details back then.

I am back on the hunt for these.

I tried repairing mine with patch panels from 914-4 plates. Alas, I am not happy with the results. Probably could have gotten there if they were painted. My (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif) metal work is not clean enough to show well when plated.
