early 911 mirror.
piech's special car built up from a very early pre production proto.

quite nice.
but you wouldn't see much out of it.
guess you didn't really need to, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

That mirror looks like the ones used on mid 1960's Alfa Romeo Duetto Spiders.

I have early 911 mirrors (from a 1970?) on my 1975 1.8. I believe these were added by the original owner who had the car for 44 years. Clearly not put on by the factory, but they look great and the visibility is just as good as the stock mirrors on my other car.

you might know the answer to this one @SirAndy

i've never seen the car in the metal.
but my business partner took these shots for me on a trip to germany 15 or so years ago. i asked him to get some close in shots of the bumper. he didn't really get in close enough but..........

.....'cause it kind of looks like a production bumper but actually nothing like it really.
at first you think its maybe just a kind of crude fit prototyping phase where the rubber top cap isn't quite a right fit.

however i recall reading somewhere that the bumpers are actually spring mounted and can take a small impact. ie parking hit.

sure explains things if that is the case.

this photo from @JeffBowlsby 's website appears to indicate the top cap is entirely independent of the bumper and possibly fixed to the body through the back.
and the bumper can move freely a small amount rearwards.

sure is a neat detail if true.
must have got dropped during productionizing bean counting?

I’m pretty sure that bumper top is fiberglass. You’re right, doesn’t appear to be attached to the bumper.

@mtndawg I'm not sure. I didn't install them, they were already on the car when I got it. I have volumes of paperwork/receipts from the previous owner but nothing documented on the mirrors that I could find. Unlike the Stuttgart museum car they do sit in the stock location and the visibility is excellent. I think it is a tastefully done modification and looks great, but there is no particular advantage over stock mirrors in terms of visibility. Certainly no advantage in terms of cost as my understanding is these mirrors are expensive. When I have the doors apart at some point in the future I'll post pictures of how they are mounted.

Almost everything about that car is different than stock.

Fun fact, all the prototypes i have seen up close had parts that had the overall shape of 914 production parts but they are all different.
None of the body panels would actually fit a production 914. And all the panels were hand-welded.

The panels are custom, the trim is custom, the windows are custom, the rubber is custom, the interior is custom, everything is custom. And then they slapped on a few VW/911/356 parts on them for good measure.

And the closer you look the more you realize that nothing is exactly the same as on a production 914.
