Battery replacement, Any0ne using a Duralast Battery ? Options

You are looking for a Group 42 battery. There are several different other sizes that are close
and maybe interchangeable. Height can be a problem because terminals too close to grill.

I'd use NOTHING but an AGM in a 914.

Sealed, cannot leak acid.

Usually 30-50% more expensive than lead acid...

Dura-last would NOT be my first choice.

I like Interstate but that brand may not be available where you are.

I was an Optima customer until they started failing early...

Look to the 1-star reviews on that link. That crap has happened to me 3 times!

I've never had one last longer than 3 years and most have dies in less (1 year was common for me).

I suggest the normal looking AGM batteries.

The MTZ and MTX line of Interstate batteries.

Dura-last "Platinum" series.

"Platinum" seems to mean AGM in a bunch of other brands.

I believe this is a Costco choice. Their warranty is unbeatable.

Costco claims you can order an AGM battery, but it looks like they have only a few choices. If you use their "battery finder" search tool there is, at least in this area, no option for a 914. However, our cars use the same battery as many Ford Mustangs so you can search for a battery for a 2006 Ford Mustang and it will give you an Interstate 40R which fits perfectly. An Interstate 96R will also fit perfectly, but Costco in my area does not keep it in stock. I got an Interstate 40R off the shelf at our local Costco for $97. The same battery was $199 at my local auto parts store. The AGM battery I use in my other 914 is the Odyssey 96R, which you can get for around $325-350. My last one was still going strong at 12 years old and went with my previous 914 when I sold it. I got the Interstate battery from Costco because at the time I needed a battery the Odyssey 96R was out of stock at just about every place I looked, and the price for the Interstate battery was a deal. Not a fan of a non-sealed battery in my 914, but I never drive it in the rain and the car is garaged at all times, so probably OK (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif). Of course for some people the weight of the battery is a concern. I'd rather have a beefier battery and carry a few extra pounds. The way that I drive my 914 it does not make any difference to have a few more pounds of weight.

I run this exact same sized battery in everything I own, including the 914s.



Just leave the side terminal caps on it and put it in with the positive to the rear. I have never had an issue with it, and it is available at your FLAPS.

I have not experienced the early failure some people reported.

I have the same Interstate AGM Group 5 size batteries in both of my 914s. The first one was installed around 3 years ago by an Indy repair shop for around $250 and the second purchased at a local Costco last summer for about $150 plus core charge which was refunded. These look like a conventional wet battery with the same base and were a perfect size fit using the original clamp. I'm pleased with the performance and value.

I have worked in industrial automation for many years in CO. I worked to bring multiple Optima plants online. The technology in optima battery's was developed by Gates and spun off to many different brands. I worked with the building of the first large scale plant in Denver and watched as that facility was moved to Mexico (Management decision) . There is no doubt that there were quality issues bring the big new plant online in Denver and the subsequent move of that plant equipment to Mexico. That said the last move was over 10 year ago. I have Optima battery's in almost all my cars (8 total) except one. I have had to replace one prematurely, most of the other have lasted 10+ years. There are may other options today for AGM in addition to Optima. For our cars with designed in Rust creation points a non leaking AGM battery is a must.

I have an Odyssey 925, and would highly recommend it, especially since it's lighter.
That said, as the post above by Artfrombama shows, because it's smaller you'll either need to buy a holder for it or fab your own. You'll also need an Odyssey approved trickle charger or it will die prematurely.

@scallyk9 . Which battery is it? Is that the Interstate MTX-47/H5? I may order that from Costco and replace my Interstate 96R flooded cell battery, which I can then put to use elsewhere.

I installed a Costco/Interstate AGM into my wife's Kona just last week. It was about $200 exactly. I'll get $15 back when I return the core.
