Thanks for all your replies in advance….
I’m new to the type I4 engine and I am building a 2.0 liter GA motor. I have come to understand that a proper build of this type is very dependent on the combination. I’ve built several engines over the years but all of them were V8’s except my first build at the age of 15, which was a type 1 beetle. I bought this 74 914 about 3 months ago and it ran fine with 93,000 miles on it. As far as I know it’s totally stock, but it was puking oil from every orifice. My plan was to pull it out and reseal it. After getting it out I noticed that there was considerable oil around the base of the cylinders and at the meeting of the heads. I pulled the heads off to clean it up and reseal it, but after my best friend looked at the heads ( he owns his own cylinder head shop) he said they were garbage. Cracks around spark plug holes and at every surface where it meets the cylinders. My budget didn’t include an engine rebuild, so I bit the bullet and ordered a set of heads from AA that are standard valve sizes. I know this is a Chinese product, but whatever needs addressing on these heads he will take care of for free. He is cleaning up the intakes and polishing them, and porting and polishing the exhaust side for me. I also ordered 96mm pistons and cylinders from AA as well. I will also have those checked and sized as needed. I am at the point where I have to figure out the cam profile. I have read for weeks about all the different companies and different cams out there. I am leaning towards the Jake Rabi deluxe cam kit that comes with everything I need. Just want to know which one would be the right fit for me. The car will be a mostly weekend car for me, but I want it to have good driving characteristics as well. Looking more for torque and not some high hp numbers. I have a set of webbers 40mm that came with the car and I am hoping to be able to use these if possible. I’m not changing the exhaust at this time and it is SS headers with a Monza exhaust. Thanks again for your time, Chad. |

I'm running an 86A in my 2056 racer with 40 Dells (36mm venturis). Drives nice.
https://aapistons.com/products/web-cam-t4 My street 2056 with Microsquirt is running a FAT performance EFI cam, 398/398 with 252 duration (1.3 lift). Probably coulda gone more aggressive than that... |

Consider a Webcam with a grind appropriate for your use. Get matching Webcam lifters. Don't mix & match different hardnesses on camshafts and lifters.
Crower springs work for us. If your friend doesn't have experience with porting 914/Type IV heads, maybe it's best to leave the heads alone, particularly since you're not looking for ultimate performance. Thse without such experience are likely to make flow worse, not better. Best wishes for your project! |

Give Dema a call at Elgin cams. Probably the best in the business, tell him what you want from the engine, he will get you the right stuff.

Thanks for all the info so far!
I have had my eye on the Raby 9130, seems to be a derivative of the 86a. They sell the ultimate kit with everything that’s needed at LN engineering. So it seems I’m on the right track from the responses so far. My best friend that owns his own cylinder head business actually did race heads for the local 911 guru at Troysport of Orlando. He has done many 356, 911, and VW heads over the past 25 years. Every engine that I’ve built he has touched the heads and all of them I am very satisfied. For free I just can’t pass it up…lol |

BTW
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) sounds like a great project and a great connection for the cylinder heads |

Yeah I bought this one to just drive it and not have to build it. All my cars I have were bought on the cheap and I restore them over time. This 914 is a Beauty and I didn’t buy it cheap! But when I seen underneath the engine and all that oil, I couldn’t leave it alone!

Building my 2056 with about 8.5 CR stock 2L valve sizes. DO NOT re-use 50 yr old sodium filled exhaust valves, new SS valves please. I selected a WEB 494 cam kit It's listed for good power to 5500 rpm. I find it has good low end grunt and I usually don't bother with 1st gear unless an uphill start. I have Dell 40's and kept stock single valve springs as I don't expect to ever over rev my motor. I'm quite happy with this selection.
