Teeners,

I took the engine apart to clean it, will add more about that within the rebuild thread I started - however - I removed the distro without noting the rotor position, can someone advise as to how to re-install the distro if I did NOT mark the position of the rotor. Sigh

UGH!

I don't feel so bad as I did the same with my 2.2T motor, engine was out like yours ,remove rocker cover on number 1 cylinder and set to TDC ,refit dizzy and line up rotor to the notch (number 1 ) on the body ,as it go's down it will move off line due to the drive gear engagement adjust so it is central and you have equal amount of advance/retard when moving the distributor body if not move it up and reset however many teeth required.
I was out by one tooth (advanced) so reset that ,got it right then.
It makes no difference if it's a Marrelli or Bosch unit as the principal is the same but seem to remember there is a difference in full advance degreases from one to the other .Cheers.

I just did this the other day.

1. Take out the #1 spark plug.

2. Put a compression tester hose in #1.

3. Using a starter button, turn the motor until compression comes out of the hose.

4. Using a 19mm wrench, turn the motor over until the TDC mark matches the case splitting line on the flywheel. Now the motor is on TDC on the compression stroke on #1. Then you can install the distributor.

5. To get the timing correct, hook a test light to the points lead with the other end on the positive side of the battery. Turn the distributor until the light goes out. That will static time the motor.

Now you can start it and set the timing with a light.

Good info Clay ,yes real easy engine out but more involved with engine in (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) .

Clay,

I need to be fine-tuned - I am struggling with the position (orientation) of the Distro in relation to perhaps the hands of the clock or something the distro could point to? The instruction you gave will allow me to get the timing very close, but I could be with the instructions 360/6 or 60 degrees off and still get the same results?

BTW - I bought a rebuild kit for the distro - will be a week or two before I re-install.

There's nothing wrong with what's been said so far. But, as additional info, especially
with the engine out of the car, you can just loosely place the distributor cap on and
make sure it's seated in the groove, then the rotor should be directly under the
connector you're using for plug #1 (when at #1 TDC determined earlier.)

Also, your paper talks about setting the dwell after roughly getting a 0.4mm points
gap. If you are using the stock CD, then setting the dwell is basically meaningless.
If you are not using the CD, I have an old dwell meter you can use.
