Had the chance to tour the factory and it was a dance that was well synched for sure. So cool to see the robots moving from station to station. Plenty of techs still doing a lot of hand work too.

I was there last summer. It was pretty amazing to see multiple robots installing a windshield without breaking it. Also didn’t know that each car on the assembly line is built to order by the customer. The company store was raped. Better selection at the PEC in Carson. The Mercedes museum was much better.

On my first visit to the Zuffenhausen factory many years ago, they proudly bragged that there was ONLY one robot used in the assembly process. It was used to install the rear glass on certain models....Oh well, this is "progress" I guess.

Impressive. So quiet. Almost no welding. Extremely tight tolerances for panels. Modern manufacturing at its best. The use of chemistry… high tech adhesives… electro plating and paint technologies. Cars that can do 200 mph without a rattle or shimmy. Metal goes in one side of the plant and magic comes out the other side.

There was a cool article in Excellence about how Porsche almost went bankrupt in the 90’s. They brought in the Japanese to teach them modern assembly techniques to save money. The workers were not happy but it needed to be done to survive. When the 996 came out, purists called it a rear engined Toyota Supra. It was superior in every way, well except for maybe the motor…. lol
