I believe 914Rubber offers a rebuild service, possibly on a core-exchange basis.

I'm unaware of anyone providing a rebuild kit for the steering rack. Somebody else might know of a source. PMB Performance does sell some parts:

https://pmbperformance.com/collections/pors...t-axle-steering

914rubber has a rebuild service:

https://914rubber.com/rebuilt-steering-rack-type-a-exchange

They might be out of stock on exchange units. I'd give them a call to confirm if you want to go that way.

PMB sells a new steering rack for $1,800

Try Elephant Racing; they have a limited rebuild service. A call might be helpful

I was able to locate a couple of possible sources ,Pelican , Auto Atlanta but these just seem to be seal replacement .
Also this one I found on Goggle search but not sure until I contact them if it fits for a 914.
Pelican also has a tech article that states its not that hard and a brief review looks like he might be using 911 parts ?

914s didn’t all use the same rack which complicates things. One of the versions was in both the 914 and 911.
914Rubber put out a video explaining this that you can find on their web site (I think). As stated they also offer a rebuild service.

I'm no steering rack expert but I've always understood that all the racks will fit any year. I would do some more research before you give up on that rack. That being said, it's not a particularly great price for an unknown rack.

Probably more like 112K. Ask IF there are documents showing car mileage. Speedometer probably rolled over. Seller has other items that do not look low mileage.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Ive encountered a few different style racks but all seemed to have the same ratio & will bolt straight up

I have two 914 steering racks and two 911 racks . Ther 911 ones have "ZF" on the casting and what looks like an adjustable pressure spring on one side . All measuring points and mounting points are the same. I also have a rebuilt one new . All are for sale if needed. I'll post pictures tomorrow. AlAttached Image Attached Image

I've used 911 racks in a couple of cars waiting that's different is the length on the shaft under steering wheel one is too long. Can't remember which one but the racks fit. Picture is of the 85 Carrera rack I bought back in 2010 that we put in Marks Sonners 1974 car we call blue boy. 2270 Raby eng rebuilt by me and mark car finished by PMB Performance

Hi Bob,
With the 85 Carrera was the steering shaft the correct length or did you have to modify it ?

For the less mechanically inclined, I would suggest running the rebuild request past a local high-quality rebuild shop. I have had great luck with California Rebuilt Exchange (CRE) in Ontario and Moreno Valley. They do top shelf work and rebuild your factory part and don't just exchange it for something they have on the shelf. I've used them for a bunch of Land Cruiser and Chevy parts and have been super happy with them. No rack problems in my 914 (I got 99 problems, but the rack ain't one) but when I need it done in the future, I wouldn't hesitate to have them do it.

Worth an ask.

Going from forgotten memory, the two bearings used for the steering shaft on a 914 rack are a HK1712 and 6202. Brand names I used were INA and SKF respectively. Both bearings were available on ebay. I did not replace the outer bushings as they were all in good condition but doing that part would have been more involved. I probably would have sent them to 914rubber for a rebuild if that was required.
