Although I'm not into convertibles, this 914 looks much better without the roll hoop. I've always thought the roll hoop looked like the designers got to the roof/roll hoop and didn't know what to do to still allow access to the engine so they just punted and chopped off roof and hoop.

As we all know, style is a subjective thing. I think it looks pretty good, especially top down. With a better executed top it would look pretty good top up also, in my subjective opinion
The car got a lot of notoriety in its day and was a prized procession of the original builder. Nothing wrong with that People have been “custom redesigning” cars forever and no make or model is exempt . The 914 is not somehow sacrosanct in that regard. Not as bad (in my subjective opinion) as the ugly double front lights, clumsy bumper treatment and mis-shaped wheel arches on Ferry’s 914-8. But what the fuch, eye of the beholder and all. |

Part of the 914 charm for me, is that it came with sail panels that were reminiscent of the purpose built Porsche racers that had come before it. They were Porsche staying true to it's design language in a way. I love the "hoop" too, it reminds me a little of a Porsche 910 with it's roof off! Turning the car into a convertible mellows it and at the same time makes it look more average - somehow, IMHO.

That cropped 914 still looks as good as a fiat Spyder, maybe better but I am a little biased...
I am not that young nor that old but I have a targa and a convertible and every time I drive them I wonder about the value. I suspect as I age my opinion will change. Not sure which way. Spring and fall, perhaps... |

Personally I don’t know why anyone would want to change the cool and eminently practical Targa top for a junky-looking convertible soft top…
The lines of the sail panel/roll bar are part of what makes the iconic shape of the 914 so cool and instantly recognizable. Without them, it’s just another more or less blah-looking convertible IMO. |

To each his own. But I will say that I would give myself more of a chance of survival in a roll over. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) The A pillar is kind of flimsy
