I just found time to check the oil in the car (914/6 conversion 2.4 spec).
After bringing it to temp and ensuring the car was on a level area, I pulled the dip stick several times, cleaning after each pull, the oil appears to be significantly higher than necessary, at least 1" past MAX. The car was running at the time of the check. 1. Should I check with the car not running as well? 2. Time to remove and refill to the proper level? Thanks all..... Trying to figure out the specifics of the '6' with the little time I have currently. |

You check the oil on a six with the engine running and up to temp.
I would remove and refill. |

Hi PlantMan,
I have owned 3 914-6's. You are checking the oil correctly; hot, level ground, running at idle. I run my car between the middle and top mark. I check it about every 500 miles. I have a large front oil cooler and my system holds about 13 quarts. You should be able to snake a flexible small tube into the oil tank and suck out a quart of oil and then top it to the correct level. Always make sure you insert the dip stick in all the way when checking the oil. Good luck. Michael (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

You check the oil on a six with the engine running and up to temp. I would remove and refill. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) ,not good for 911 , that's a lot of extra oil ,you could drain some off but the best solution is to dump the lot so you can establish a true level ,should be fine to reuse that oil ,up to you. It depends on tank used, the filler neck and dipstick, mine is factory steel tank with PMS filler neck as supplied by PO ,which I had to modify it so it worked, got there in the end. Ben makes the best filler I have seen. Cheers. |

Thanks all.
Appreciate the information..... I am leaning towards changing it out and going fresh. Not sure the current status and life on the current oil unless I can find it in the paper work with the car. |

Is this an original or conversion?
Our recent /6 conversion required 11 or so qt's to get a reading on the dipstick. but smoked badly. PMS oil tank I drained a couple qt's and now running about 9 still have an issue with dipstick length (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif) |

Stock is a formed steel tank. Aftermarket is typically a welded aluminum tank. A magnet should tell the tale. |

Sorry for some reason assumed you had changed the oil so certainly change it ,did the engine smoke on start up with the oil high level ? . Cheers. |

If oil is unknown, start fresh and get a new filter. Oil is cheap compared to engine work.

PMS oil tank I drained a couple qt's and now running about 9 still have an issue with dipstick length (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif) There is only one way to mark full and that’s with a dry engine(drained) dry lines and then dry tank. Fill with 9 QTs with any manufacturer tank, run to warm up temp (180) idling check level and then mark the dipstick. That is full. Now if it had a front cooler your need to make calculations for that and add that to the 9 QTs of a stock system |

It is short but will smoke for a moment until it clears out any oil. When the oil is this high, I am assuming it is leaking through the heads into the combustion chamber or do I have that wrong? I would think it would not take much oil to burn off into a cloud at start-up. Also, only happens after 2-3 days of not driving. |
