The original size was 165R15, roughly equivalent to 165/80-15. That size will work and give you the closest approximation to the original ride and handling. I believe that Coker Tire makes repro Michelin XWX tires in that size, which would be appropriate for the 914.
Most of us tend to like lower and wider tires which add to the cornering grip. You can go as wide as 205 width on most 914s without extensive mods. (You often have to flatten the fender lip in the rear.) 195s should fit on pretty much all 914s on stock wheels. Note that VW Bug wheels will move the tires outward in the fenders, meaning it will be difficult to fit wider tires. Also note that 914s are almost all slightly asymmetrical, and will have more trouble fitting wider tires under one rear fender or the other. But not always the same fender from car to car... People will run anything from 70 series (195/70-15) down to 50 series (195/50-15) depending on taste. I used to run the latter to get lower gearing for autocross, but it was a pain on the highway and the ride was quite harsh. I currently run 205/60-15 because I could get the kind of tire I wanted in that size. --DD |
