My '74 Saturn Yellow with black painted Fuchs wheels has chrome bumpers.
I have a line on a pair of early (70-74) black bumpers here from someone I know that look OK (from pictures) and would be relatively inexpensive. Going to have a look on Saturday. They probably need a little rework in any case, plus of course paint. I guess the original finish on these was the same sort of semi-matte black as are on the rocker panels and valences? So my idea is to try a sort of reverse-Bumblebee scheme replacing the chrome bumpers with the refinished black ones. OK, I don't have a front spoiler (yet), but... The LE bumpers were finished in body accent color, i.e. glossy. So I would paint the bumpers in gloss black. Hmm maybe the foglight grilles would need to be in yellow? Stupid idea? If you do decide to go with the satin black finish, your best bet is to paint them with regular single stage black paint. Then use a flattening agent in the clear coat to give you that satin look, but still give you a great topcoat that will last way longer than a single stage satin black. When you do it this way it looks like a regular clear shiny coat for a couple days, then it flattens out to a beautiful satin finish.

I am an old fart. I like chrome bumpers on an early car. Putting black bumpers on an early car makes it look like an late 75&76 car with the black rubba bumpers . My 2 cents worth ....

I'm an old fart too... But not too averse from trying some new stuff. If it isn't a nice change, the original chrome bumpers can be put back on easily. Correct me if I am wrong, but the black bumpers were standard in Europe (at least on the early models?), the chrome ones were part of an extra appearance package. I think all of the USA market cars (up to '74) however came with chrome as standard. |
