one of the greats of australian motor sport passed away yesterday.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-11-22/moto...ed-83/106041046 a hero of the bathurst endurance races during my childhood. high point was the ford 1-2 victory 1978 in the ford hardtops. the driver pairings were amazing. allan moffat and jacky ickx in the #1 car. colin bond and allan hamilton in the #2 car. qualifying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwwogpK53Qw race end https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMDPd_A1dZU i think jacky ickx may have been one of the first international drivers to take part in the race down here at a time when australia truly was a long long way from anywhere else in the world. "the tyranny of distance" as it was once termed. alan hamilton was the australian porsche distributor who was an active race driver until a terrible accident ended his participation in motor sport. for many years alan owned one of the remaining can-am 917 turbos. that car is now in the USA i believe. alan moffat and colin bond needed no introduction to australian motor racing fans. colin bond is now the only surviving member of the driving team of that day. |
