I have a very slight oil leak that appears to be coming out of the small notch at the joint between the motor and the transmission. It's really nothing that I'm worried about, every once in awhile there is a drop on the floor... I was just curious, does this indicate that the crankshaft main seal is leaking, or it it the transmission?

Taste it . . . (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif)

But seriously - smell it.

Gear lube has a distinctly different - sulfur, rotten eggs sort of smell that motor oil doesn’t.

Yeah, that was my first thought, I do know what 90 weight smells like, did that, but I really couldn't smelll much. I guess it's engine oil then.

Very distinctive. Smear a little on your neck. Drives the women wild (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif)

RMS is the location that is way more likely to leak due to constant supply of oil going to it vs the trans seal that is basically splash only.

Looks like RMS to me however is it dripping out the bottom the bellhousing opening ? , if so that well indicate something more than a slight oil leak.

RMS. Just had this same issue, but since we use Swepco gear oil (it's a greenish blue color) it's easy to tell the difference. Left alone, it'll only get worse and could ruin the clutch material.

Suggest you get the gowesty.com seal installer and watch their video. This tool has a built-in drill bit guide that makes adding a drainback hole easy.

BTW you can replace this seal without pulling the engine/transmission, as follows:

Disconnect battery cable, clutch cable, speedometer cable and shift rod at transmission

Remove starter (the hardest part of the whole job is removing the top fastener, which can be done with a medium-long extension on your ratchet)

Remove muffler (3 fasteners per side) and hanger (two 13mm nuts)

Remove rear transmission fasteners

Remove remaining 3 motor to engine fasteners

Place two stands under motor/transmission and pull transmission away from motor onto the stands

Remove pressure plate and clutch disk (6 fasteners) use flywheel lock

Remove flywheel (5 fasteners) using flywheel lock

Replace seal (see above link for gowesty.com video)

Put everything back together (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

take it for a good long drive.
300-400km round trip.
might stop it.

looks like rms to me.

after i recommissioned mine about 4/5 years ago we did the rms while we were doing the clutch - no worries. but obviously did not do the front main seal. and it leaked.
i took it for a big drive. it stopped leaking and has not leaked since. plenty of short/shortish drives since. hour. hour and a half. the big drive got it all sealed up again.

and...to do the rms we only pulled the trans as per jackstanz above. and did the clutch.
and of course did rms while you are there. did not drop engine.

might work for you. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
