I was just telling my son that I knew the clutch cable was going to snap!
On my way home on Friday, it snapped going into 3rd gear! AAA to the rescue! I have 2 cables on the way so I can have a spare in the car with all the connections. Of course, this is not the first time this has happened to me and you would think I would have learned the first time.... Has anyone actually changed theirs on the side of the road before??? Yes, by driving the left side up onto a high curb. Have also limped home last year in 2nd gear when it broke about 1/2 mile from the house.
Also, fixed a Westfalia bus clutch cable in a Safeway (grocery store if you're not familiar) parking lot on the way to Mexico for a vacation on the beach many years ago. Busses have more ground clearance so not as much a problem, if you have a spare cable. Good plan to have a spare, and a couple 11mm wrenches too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . |

Replacing the clutch cable in a garage is a PIA let alone on the side of the road! You guys are real troopers! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif)

If you’re handy with a manual - can be driven home without the clutch. Traffic lights add to the challenge but it’s do-able.

“ Good plan to have a spare, and a couple 11mm wrenches too “ I keep a small bag with two 11mm wrenches, small vice grip, extra nuts, And a loop of bungi cord, and of course disposable gloves and a magnetic flashlight The bungi cord is used to pull up on the clutch pedal inside the cabin |

Best is to use the Terry Cable
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/B423...RxoCjqYQAvD_BwE This cable is double braided it will let you know when it’s going to fail by stretching, a little more costly but you will get home even if half of the strands break. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Fixed mine the same way at the edge of the VAW-124 parking lot in spring of ‘82. LT Bill Klein had a silver ‘73—we fixed his the same way about a week later. Cable breaks must have been contagious. |
