I've have a 70 916/6 restored to at or near concours condition about 20 years ago. I've owned the car for 14 years. All numbers/paint match, but the CoA does not list the 5-speed transmission number, says "information not available."

The transmission has correct tail shifter and all linkage per 70 916/6. However, the transmission is stamped with 914/4 number. As part of the resto, the trans was completely rebuilt with new RP, syncros, etc. Notes from Previous Owner is that the car is "all original." Everything else on the car is. My understanding is that the 914/4 and 916/6 both used 901 based Porsche transmissions.

Question:

1 -Is 901 trans commonality correct?

2 - Does anyone have a /6 with trans # missing on the CoA and /4 markings on the transmission?

3 -What could be explanation for this set up on my car.

I got our CoA many years ago. Back when you could just send a check and a VIN number to Porsche and they'd tell you the numbers and options your car had with no dealer check.

Our 1970 914-6 also lists on the CoA:

Hello,

a friend of mine tell me, if you've got an exchange transmission (also directly from Porsche), the numbers are the same as at the -4 Transmissions. If it's the original what comes with the car, there have to be a "plate" at the transmission. See Photo.

Thanks all -- I also have the old-type CoA, purchased 13 years ago for my /6. Trying to figure out why this otherwise all original car has /4 gearbox stamping with /6 linkage. Replacement makes sense. Anyone else have /6 with /4 gearbox stamping -- could this have been installed at factory?

The general answer is: in the data used by most distributors there are no transmission #'s recorded for the 914/4 or 914/6, so in general they cannot be confirmed. In the late 914/4 the transmissions did not have serial numbers, just date codes.
The 914/6 transmissions were different than the 914/4 so had their own unique set of serial numbers. No 914/6 came with a 914/4 gearbox!
The only place I know to get reliable 914/6 transmission serial #'s are from the approximate 600 F-A (Fahrzeug-Auftrag or vehicle order) documents that are available. There are most of the 1971 model year, a few of the 1970 MY and none in 1972 MY.
In general terms the trans serial # tracks the VIN (compare last 4 digits of each) with the majority within +/-50.
Any 914 transmission serial # and VIN combo would be welcome additions to my database to help make the sequence clear. Email me with the info.

Thanks Dave, it's just one of those anomalies that won't be revealed. I guess I'll be satisfied knowing it was completely rebuilt, has the /6 linkage, and in the 14 years I've owned it has performed flawlessly!

I just went through this exercise but sincec Dave responded you have the most accurate information possible. I doubt you would have interest, but I have a 914-6 empty case that has the number on the rib like a 4. Dave gave me verification it is a legit 6 housing.
I was going to build it but found a complete unit so will not need it.

In April 2016 I requested a CoA for my '70 factory -6. I had (have) owned it since July 1977 so pretty sure it is all original. When I submitted the CoA request, I included every number I could find on the car for confirmation. It came back with the trans number I provided listed.
